You can save a fortune on home-made bait and it’s great to catch on your own 'secret' concoction too!

BACKGROUND TO BAIT MAKING

What's a base mix? The idea is to mix various powdered bait ingredients together to form a 'Base Mix' with liquids - to make a workable dough or paste that you can then shape into boilies for fishing on a hook or hair rig. Your boilies don't have to be round, they can be any shape you want, they can even be chopped up with a knife into random shapes and sizes called 'chops' to fool the fish but most anglers prefer them round.
It may come as a surprise to a newcomer to learn that fish need to eat a variety of different food much the same as we humans do, therefore a little experimentation is encouraged as this is very often the key to success with bait making and is all part of the fun.

Want to have a go? Bait Bunker sells ready-made boilies and base mixes and bait activators; we also sell the ingredients and additives to make your own.
Although nutrition plays a large part in a fishes diet along with variety and preferences, temperature, time of year etc. you can also make a simple bait if you want to. Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals and vitamins are essential components of a fishes diet, whereas simple ingredients like; salt, sugars, amino acids, certain bacteria, yeasts, minerals and a variety of soluble ingredients that leach well in the water is what attracts them.
As an angler it’s our job to find out what they want on the day and it all starts with what you decide to put in your bait. So where do you start?
