I will start this thread off with my Barn Owl Jessie, she is just coming up to 2 years old (hatch date7/7/13) and I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. Today is the first time I have attempted to fly her in a couple of months due to me having surgery in early May. It really did make me happy that she flew to glove without needing to be tempted with food. Normally she would only fly to glove if I had a piece of day old chick to tempt her, but today was different :).
I had to share this, and I do realise it isn't Fishing related but it made me wonder if anyone else had an unusual pet.

We kept a "pet" bottle of milk in the garage for three years when we were teenagers, amazing the changes it went through but it never evaporated.

It got knocked over in the end and we all ran like hell!

Not really the same is it...

My strangest pet?

Her indoors!

Yep, that is very impressive, we've got one on our fishery which gives us a nice flying and hunting display most evenings, often in broad daylight.

My only pets are my koi carp one of which is over 20lb and my daughters dog who spends the days with me while she is at work.
He's a Staffordshire Labrador cross and is most happy when he is hanging by his teeth to a low hanging tree bough with his back feet just touching the floor or wading up to his chest in a pond.
Although he looks a bit intimidating he's got a reputation among the local dog walkers as nuts but harmless, he's actually one of the friendliest little chaps it's ever been my privilege to know.

That's the thing with crows. You can eject them from the nest but they have a habit of coming back.

I used to keep a lot of tropical fish, specialising in African Catfish many moons ago.

Amongst the weird and wonderful was Malaptererus Electricus,
The Electric Catfish. An interesting, if somewhat ugly species. It became tame and would come to the top when I entered the fish room to feed it. Grew to just short of 18 inches before I got rid of it, but they do grow a lot larger.

It never really had a name, though Sparky would have been the obvious choice. Only once did I receive a shock, and I can vouch for the fact that it does hurt!

Kept some maggots in a fridge for about 3 months once. I almost got to know each one. It was such a shame when they turned to casters.

Seriously though, i did have a friend who kept a very large electric eel in a tank. The tank was about 7ft x 3ft x 3ft and the eel must have been about 3ft long. She had to avoid ever putting her hands in the water when she fed it or cleaned the glass, but after a while i think she did as she trusted that it wasnt stressed by it.

My niece fostered a couple of owls for a rescue centre but they were told to keep handling to a minimum because they would eventually be released into the wild.
All I remember was the smell which was surprisingly pungent and the rigmarole they went through to feed them, she had to wear a suit which was similar to a ghillie suit so they wouldn't associate the human profile with food.

My owl is imprinted now, so basically she see's me as her mother, feeding time is great now she is flying to glove again , she does need cleaning regular or it does become a bit whiffy in there especially now it warm. Great to hear that your niece took an interest (I dont think I would have been able to give them back)
