Why should I buy a new rod?

I have been looking at buying the Korum 12ft 1.5 tc all-rounder rod £50 - then today I've seen a Shimano Alivio barbel rod 12 3 tips and 1.5tc avon top £50

Trouble is I already have a 1.75tc barbel rod and a 1.75 tc barbel rod with 3 tips anda 1.75 tc avon top - and I don't fish much for barbel - but they are good rods for carp up to the 20lb mark

I should also mention I have a 1.25 tc avon rod with 3 tips

Now lets' face it I don't need another rod between what I have plus some other I am covered - I also have a 2.5lb tc and a 2.75lb tc carp rods

So why should I buy either of the rods I've seen

you certainly have a range of test curves there your lordship, but the 1.75 is perhaps a little overgunned for bream, tench and chub, so go for it.

But also consider the action of your rods - your 1.75 barbel rods may be good for carp and I would also say they are good for pike fishing with small deads and livies - BUT what about the action of your rods - you now need to start building up a range of actions to give you unlimited permutations....

Sounds like you have enough feeder rods M'Lud, may I suggest you look at the Drennan Acolyte or alternatively the Hardys Supero range of float rods , lots of different ones there to go at. You may however have to re-mortgage the West Wing to purchase the entire sets :wh.

Paul I have a 1.5 Nexave Shimano and the playing action on that rod is in my view sublime. If the Alivio is anywhere as good as nexave its a really fine rod to have. It also makes a really good stepped up chub rod for tight swims on small rivers. I can't think of ever losing either a barbel or a chub on it when I've used it on the Ribble with up to 1/2 m on. Over that height and go for the 1 3/4s Harrisons. Or the old 11. 06 1.5 test Daiwa Specialist Mk2, which are shorter and a bit stiffer in the blank even though they are rated at the above T C because of their age.

Ahhh...I have a particularly tasty handmade leger rod to put to the test on my return. Picked it up at an open day of a major angling organisation somewhere in the UK. (Think that's vague enough....phew).

It promises to be an absolute beauty...although my two beloved Drennan legermasters are having a sulk...

I would suggest you to take both "it's not" and "the bad one's" advice this very moment....interest rates won't stay this low....forever.....

Oh...and if folk are wondering if I'm back in a country somewhere between the Picts, the Welsh and all the Nations occupied by the Spanish Empire in the 16th and 17th century...you're wrong....it is just so effing hot out here in wonderful Eastern Europe...that after 6 weeks it gets a little too much.....even the price of ale at about 80p for 2.5 litres starts to lose it's attraction. (that last bit may just be one tiny HUGE lie):wh:beer::guinness::doh:

I'd tend to go with The Bad One on this. I find 1.5lb rods to be a little inbetween for my needs. They do make for a good big chub rod where there's a chance of barbel. However, I rarely specifically target big chub. Despite having 1.5lb rods, I tend to find that 1.25 Avons (for chub with little expectation of barbel turning up) and 1.75lb barbel (when going specifically for barbel) rods see much more bank time. I'd also look to use the 1.5lb rods for large tench and bream at a reasonable distance. Unfortunately, there isn't a great deal of that type of fishing available to me at the moment.

Whether you buy the 1.5lb rods should depend on whether they fit a niche you have a genuine requirement for. Alternatively, if you've got the money and the desire, go for it.

Now lets' face it I don't need another rod

. . . erm, since when has "need" been any criteria whatsoever for any self-respecting Tackle Tart to buy antoher rod?

The only criteria that comes into the reckoning should be . . .

"do I want a new rod"

We will be considering the renawal of the Tackle Tart's of the UK membership at our next AGM, and let me tell you, I don't think you stand much of a chance of renewal . . .

do I need another rod, indeed . . . . Grrrr!

Go get it man!
