he Angling Trust deserves your support in its dealings with politicians and the media to defend and promote fishing. Find out all about the Angling Trust and its work at Angling Trust Organisation for Anglers or call us on 01568 620447. If you're not already a member DO consider joining.

They don't need my support, they have been given it by the EA against my wishes from my licence fee in the contract recently awarded to the AT.

There will always be someone in this world telling you what you are doing is wrong, I really don't give a **** about them, oops was that something else I have done wrong. :)

in the early noughties I encountered some "anti's" as a coach and managed to counter their arguments quite easily... one was wearing a leather jacket and a pair of Doc martens boots...

When I asked him where he thinks his jacket and boots came from he got all defensive.... 1 call to plod later and he was removed and charged with breach of the peace...

Working where I do, I come up against anti's quite a lot.. their arguments against animal experiments are easy to deflect, by asking them if they would be willing to volunteer to do the testing, so that they could have a paracetamol when they have a headache....

and I know for a fact that they'd scream blue murder should they contract a debilitating, or life threatening disease, for access to the latest drugs.... so it kinda raises the question of double standards to me....

and if the RSPCA is supposed to be a charity why are they wasting public contributions on £100k salaries and pension pot deficits.....????
tis all a con to get the rentamob fired up to rake in more shekels.....

and as for the extremists wanting to stop meat consumption, that's okay, lets hear their plans for global vegetarian food production..... Oh...! could it be that they haven't a s*dding clue....? I should say so...!

Another extremist hate filled preaching diatribe from RS.

Now its the RSPCA, what a load of piffle, the last time I read the official pamphlet on angling from the RSPCA it was full of good advice to anglers on animal and fish welfare and not one anti angling message. On the contrary, it expressed an appreciation of the hobby and peoples enjoyment of it.

Who are the AT and RS going to try to turn us all against next? Not really that bothered, it goes in one ear and out the other. Their miserable world is a world away from mine. Angling extremists are on the increase in worrying numbers.

I agree with almost all you say but having tried a few vegan meals and done some reading then I believe vegetarian food production is much more efficient in producing calories than beef or lamb production. intuitively this would appear so too , meat production has to go through an extra biological process whereas vegetables can be eaten straight away.

I do eat meat all the time , but if you want to feed the world then vegan is the way to go.

Sorry.... but I'll be sticking with a roasted animal for the foreseeable future.... Homo-Sapiens have canine teeth for meat eating it's how we as a race have developed our protein needs... for me a bit o' Tufu bean curd, Soya or a Linda McCartney banger don't cut it... but I take your point:p

But it's not just calories that you need Benny. I have no doubt that we eat far more meat than we need to but without any, it is very difficult to get sufficient trace elements, vitamins, amino's etc without taking suppliments. Which are made by the pharmacuetical industry which most vegan's that I have met abhor.

Must put the rolled sirloin in the oven!:D

Actually, got sidetracked by the food talk. Just finished reading Magnus Pyke's book on understanding nutrition (to help me revisit the HNV concepts in Carp Baits, sad isn't it!) makes very intersting reading on what we require to thrive and survive but I digress.

The article is interesting in that these extremists do weedle their way into positions of influence in all walks of life. They are fanatics, it's what they do.

However, whilst we should keep a watching brief on these nutters, we don't need to, and shouldn't over react. In most cases they devour themselves eventually.

To rally the troups, draw people into the fold, (get people to part with their hard eared ackers) you need a bogeyman of some sort. NATO/Warsaw Pact, Tory/Labour, The West/ISIS etc, Atr/Anti's (?).

I've been a member of the Atr since it started and of the ACA for decades before, so I don't need a bogeyman. I think that it's on balance a good thing, but it's my money, my choice.

I can't remember who I was answering in a remarkably mild mannered exchange on the subject of the ATr but I said that the only thing that would ever unite anglers is a very credible threat to the right to keep fishing. It's the only thing that will ever overcome our differences.

In the meantime, as despite the article no such threat exists at the moment, if you want to be a member of the ATr do, if not, don't.

Obviously at the moment, if you assume approx 1M anglers (that I think is the most frightening statistic, it used to be 4M!) most don't or can't see why they should.

Whenever reading the name P#TA I always remember the FACT that their president Ingrid Newkirk is an insulin dependent diabetic, who uses an animal based Insulin . . . . . . . shades of double standards perhaps?

Where I would agree with RS though is that these activists at P#TA are in it for the long, long game and target children all over the world.

Where I would disagree with RS however is that the Angling Trust to not deserve my support, rather that they have to earn it!

Currently I am a member but that status is wholly contingent upon them continuing to be successful in their work for Angling.

I saw one of those BBC nature programmes about sharks. A couple of the camera people were wearing T shirts with the logo PETA on them no doubt for a bit of subliminal propaganda.
The thing was the hypocrites were attracting the sharks to be filmed with.....................mashed up dead fish for rubby dubby.

You'd think that they would have tried to convince Jaws that Tofu was a superior alternative!

Rather than joining the ATr, one thing that we can all do is find out which companies or organisations support P#TA and boycott them when you can. I haven't eaten Ben and Jerry's ice cream for years. They are a bunch of extremist nutters with an agenda that would horrify most people. Of course they don't promote their more unpopular policies (banning the keeping of pets being just one).

If not now he certainly used to...
I last went there about 5 yrs ago and he was certainly still fly fishing, he came down and had a few carsts in the evening. He still lives in the house but no idea if he still owns the lakes.

Not sure if this is entirely relevant due to being over the pond (the states) but there seems to be quite a lot of talk about animal cruelty originating from this very self righteous of social justice warriors/people of the rainbow group.

https://www.bestthinking.com/trendi.../activism/animal_rights/the-hypocrisy-of-peta

Topic By Sebastian Murdock

At first glance, PETA—or, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals—seems like a noble cause. They champion rights for all animals, giving a voice to the voiceless.

But their tactics might be a little off.

PETA often preaches vegetarianism and veganism through shocking and disturbing videos like “Meet your Meat” and use risqué PR stunts including the use of celebrity’s posing naked with the tagline: “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.” And while some might criticize the in-your-face tactics of PETA’s message, their once risqué behavior has now become downright cruel. And who suffers the most from PETAs new message? The animals they’ve sworn to save.

Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, is well-known for her extreme views when it comes to animal rights. In the past, Newkirk has launched campaigns including the proposed placing of a billboard in Sacramento, depicting a pork chop being placed in a microwave with the line “Everybody’s Somebody’s Baby” after the horrific death of an infant child whose mother put her in a microwave rocked the city. Newkirk also has a rather unorthodox will posted to the PETA website, encouraging those closest to her to use all of her body parts in an effort to raise awareness for animal cruelty, including using her human meat as a barbecue in an effort to “remind the world that the meat of a corpse is all flesh, regardless of whether it comes from a human being or another animal, and that flesh foods are not needed.”

But there’s one especially disturbing trend at the PETA headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, that seem to discredit all of the work Newkirk and her followers do. It’s the fact that the majority of healthy, adoptable pets that come into PETA’s shelters are almost immediately killed by the organization the very next day. According to an article in The Atlantic, 2011 saw an adoption rate of dogs at the PETA shelter at only 2.5 percent, with cats at 0.4, probably because 84 percent of animals that PETA claim to “save” are euthanized the very next day.

Is this maliciousness intentional? It would seem so. PETA argues their reasons for killing so many of these animals is because they would rather euthanize them then let them live in squalid conditions. In the article, spokesperson for PETA, Amanda Schinke, says “sometimes [animals] need the comfort of being put out of their misery—a painless release from a world in which they were abused and unwanted.” But how would PETA know these animals are truly unwanted if killing them only 24 hours after taking them in? And one would think, with PETA’s staggering $30 million, that the organization could find it in their budget to make their shelter as comfortable as possible for the animals they’ve so self-righteously lied about protecting, instead of sticking them with a needle and shrugging off their deaths as “humane.”

To make matters worse, when a shelter in Shelby, Kentucky, announced they had run out of space and would unfortunately have to start euthanizing animals, PETA sent the shelter a basket of gourmet cookies, thanking the shelter for killing its animals.

Has the hypocrisy made your blood boil yet? It should.

While a point can be made that PETA has changed a culture of meat-hungry youths into animal-loving vegans, PETA’s complete lack of respect for animals that even meat-eaters love and adore is simply despicable, and discredits any praise that was once lavished upon the organization.

These celebrities are PETA activists, but have shown flexibility with the organization’s forceful call for strict vegetarianism, also known as veganism.

Pamela Anderson’s Dodge Viper (auctioned to benefit PETA) had a “luxurious leather interior.”
Jenna Jameson was photographed fishing, slurping oysters, and wearing a leather jacket just weeks after launching an anti-leather campaign for PETA.
Morrissey got an official okay from PETA after eating at a steakhouse.
Dita von Teese has written about her love of furs and foie gras.
Steve-O built a career on abusing small animals on film.
The officially “anti-fur” Eva Mendes has worn fur anyway.
:eek:mg: Looks like a P.A. stunt then after all, never get in the way of a social justice warrior, they will automatically have a bottomless pit of funding (even in times of austerity) to out warrior you :D

Hmm, not posted on this website before, overstocked lakes overfull off carp, caught by match anglers and dumped in keepnets with a hundred pound of fish dumped on top of them, food for thought, I am a lifelong specialist angler, 50 years of fishing, do not give them ammunition, we need to keep our own house in order in this PC world.
