Okay lads, these posts are designed to give us all an insight into what motivates us all to do what we do, it may be an age thing or a specialisation, but hell its worth a chat. What makes you make the effort, what gets the Adrenalin running, how do you go about it, does it change with age and circumstance, with me it has, hows about you. come on young and old what do you do know that is different from what you are used to do, or where do you want to go with angling. The floor is yours, I have come through years of secretive specy stuff, settled for a comfortable Estate lake carping with a bit of river carping and Barbell on the side, do we lose the urge or is it just me.

For me it would have to be ''surface'' lure fishing. The anticipation of something exploding onto my lure. Even today after over half a century the excitement has never dimmed, and my heart races like a mad thing, talk about a change of underwear. When it happens everything is visual and sudden, apart from the occasions you notice a bump in the water following the lure prior to the take. It's an addiction from which I don't want to be cured.

In fact it's the only time in my lure fishing where the size of the fish is not a prime consideration.

Sorry guys, I thought it was general fishing. Perhaps Peter will delete it for me.

Yo Derek, you have the real Buzz, I used to crave the elusive giants , these days it is just the peace and tranquillity of my surroundings with the odd fish, how we change, it seems you haven't, good luck to you my friend, buzz always.

My motivation for fishing is simply that I love fishing, I don't find it an effort to get out even during the winter where I generally get a bit down in the dumps if I can't get two or three sessions a week in.

The added attractions such as the wildlife, peace and solitude etc are a welcome bonus but I've never felt the urge to specialise despite having occasional prolonged hang ups with certain species, if ever I did specialise it would likely be the perch but I know for a fact I would miss the existing diversity of my fishing if I did.

Its got to be expectation. Getting out of a nice warm bed at silly o'clock to drive 90 miles to spend the day piking on a hard water for the possibility of a pb. Even now after many years of doing this i still get a buzz when the alarm sounds and the indicator moves.
And a day out fishing with good friends helps.............

Does it change with age and circumstance?

Well for me it has.

Since I retired early several years ago and now can go fishing whenever I want at a moments notice my fishing has become much more relaxed, although I still only go after decent sized fish and absolutely hate catching lots of small fish.

If conditions look good then I can just chuck my rods in the car and go without having to worry about taking any time off work and can take advantage of any changes in temperature and other favourable weather conditions.

On one section of river I fish members often catch upwards of 20 to 25 Barbel in a day trotting a stick float, but these days after catching only 2 or 3 Barbel I will sometimes be quite content with just sitting back to soak up the atmosphere and the wildlife around me whereas in my earlier years catching as much possible in the limited time available to me always used to be paramount.

Plus I have now got some very nice venues that I can fish as I have accrued a life membership for services rendered to the club over the years at a beautiful private estate lake and have membership to one of the best clubs in my area wich has access to over 20 top class rivers and stillwaters.

So age has definately been instrumental in improving my fishing experiences.

Keith
