This is a dedicated thread for discussing article: Illegal fishing net found strung across Thames in Teddington

This article is a bit late - but still relevant. Are there further comments viewers would care to make? Is it safe to assume the culprits are not British?

How 'vibrant'... How 'enriching'... Two words you don't hear much any more! The extensive list of 'worthies' who queued-up to tell us how wonderful 'diversity'was 8-10 years ago should hang their heads in shame. Fish-trapping on our lakes and rivers is rife...not to mention a hundred other phenomena new to Great Britain.

I had a day's roach fishing on the river Beult in Kent on Tuesday. When I arrived I saw a bottle in the margins and fished it out with my landing net.

This is the bottle trap that was connected to the bank. It looked like it may have been there some time.

Careful Cliff with a hundred other phenomena you may be straying into real politics which breaches the ethos of this website and you might have to delete yourself.

I would be amazed if trading standards wouldn't stop a market stall selling illegally sourced fish has anyone contemplated this route ?

You know...I'm beginning to think that my recent inability [last 2 years] to catch tench from a tench lake might not be anything to do with my angling ability or the bait I'm using after all. I'm beginning to wonder if its because there aren't many tench left to catch now.

100 House points to Mr Roberts for removing said death trap. Good man !

If anyone notices a stall or shop selling coarse fish I suggest you contact your local council if they deny the stall a permit that might quench the activity even a little.

The other week whilst fishing a local commercial Trout lake - I noticed a number of similar 'bottle traps' around the pontoons on the road side of the lake - and thought "I know what's being going on here!". Hot-footed it over to the Bailiff's office and duly reported them.

When he stopped laughing and dried himself down - he thanked me for my vigilance - then explained they weren't fishing traps but in fact were part of his anti-parasite dosing treatment to try and rid the water of one of it's current infestations!:eek::eek:mg:

Thanks for your concern, Benny, but I'm not sure that the things i refer to can be considered political. The limbless torsos of young African boys floating down the Thames might be seen as a pollution problem, for example.

Well I better not argue with someone who can summarily delete my posts if We disagree

I do think you could stop someone selling coarse fish on a market stall by contacting your local council if I see that I n my area I will certainly do so

Read about this a few days ago, very sad indeed and the response from the "powers that be" was also very sad too.:( As for the bottle trap that Mr Roberts found, how did they get the juice can into the bottle:confused: and a well done to him for fishing it out.

how does the bottle trap work presumably it floats , suspends a bait and the buoyancy makes it act like a bolt rig ?

Bottom line is keep your eyes open for anything in the margins. Often it's tied to something and whilst they will keep doing it why make it easy for them.

Yes, that's exactly how it works. Unfortunately it it doesn't discriminate and can catch birds as well as fish. This one clearly had not been checked recently. It would be a shame to put the life of wildlife at risk. This swan passed by shortly after I had pulled the trap.

This might be a good angling trust initiative contact every council via email and confirm they are aware that the product of illegal fishing are being sold on some markets and ask they don't grant a stall permit if there is.

If it's difficult to sell them what's the point in netting them ?

I have sent this email to Martin Salter Head of AT campaigns - it might not be a practical or worthwhile idea though.

Martin

there are some interesting articles on Fishing Magic relating to high volume illegal poaching.

I was amazed to hear that quite a few of these fish make their way to Britain's Market stalls.

Is it worth the AT contacting local councils to ensure that they do not grant stall permits to anyone selling these types of goods and at the same time asking Trading standards officers to look out for similar items in specialist shops.

just an idea

Cheers

Doubtful its illegal fish been sold openly in British markets, more the problem of tackling the 'Catch to Eat' bandits and the insatiable demand on the Black Market... Polishing them off!

Question, can a gamekeeper legally blunderbuss some poachers arse?

Tricky one that . . . . if a gamekeeper is appointed, such appointments are restricted to Lords of Manors, Lordships and Royalty and have to be registered with local authorities, then they have the special power to seize dogs, nets and other equipment, but the law falls short (unfortunately) of allowing them to shoot a poacher in the ar$e . . . . at least you cannot find a reference in the Game Act of 1831 but that Act was brought in specifically to protect Birds ;)
