This is one for the all rounders really.

Could you take a whole season out of your fishing to specialise on one aim?

I have the aim, I'm just not sure it's worth missing out on all the other species and seasonal variations throughout the year.

So, could/would/have you taken a whole season out to pursue a single species ambition?

Would that be chasing the same fish that I am?:)

NO

I have fished from April to October for Tench, but thats as far as i would go.

I enjoy the rivers to much to give up for one species.

No. I've come close to doing nothing but carping, barbelling or trotting, but I can never do one thing exclusively. Variety is the spice of life for me. Whenever I have done one thing too much I tend to end up a bit sick of it and end up stopping for a while until I get my mojo for it back.

Never go for just the one, I love the sea, coarse and game, only health problems in my family has made me miss a helluva lot these past two years.

A happy, healthy New Year to yer all anyway. ;)

In the season 2004/5 I spent most of it chasing the Colne barbel.
Summer fish caught on the float in the margin.

A December fish @11lb 4. On the John Wilson 11ft barbel quiver tip rod.

Last day of the season 10lb13 on the same rod.

tbh I was sick of it after that season and have never had the desire to try again.

That would depend on how much I wanted to catch the fish in question. If I wanted the fish enough to give up the other species in order to catch it then I reckon if I was lucky enough to actually catch my intended fish it would be worth the sacrifice....if that makes sense ;). I think it would be a very satisfiying feeling to get the intended quarry, then i'd fill me boots on the other species.

You may well be right ;)

I've been fortunate enough to have caught four perch last year topping over 3lb, I reckon an approx 60 hours dedicated to catching that particular species and the majority of those hours using livebait on a lake that holds no pike so plenty of blank sessions. I just don't have the patience for this type of fishing but still am drawn to the thrill of catching large perch so changed from using livebait to worm knowing this would catch a few carp and roach as well which indeed it has and fortunately the big stripeys have taken the bait as well.

Having not fished for nigh on forty years I've enjoyed my first full year back, there are so many great fish to catch it seems wrong to target just one species, it is a struggle when planning a trip, perhaps if I can catch that elusive 4iber I can move on:)

The nicest thing for me is the infinate variety offered by seeking all species in all conditions in all four seasons with all the available methods. Theoretically its possible I suppose to start at one end and work thro the whole fishy menu but in reallity the seasons and other factors force one to cherry pick so in reallity its a never ending quest and long may it be so.
Yes, I've had prolonged periods of time chasing the odd fish/species etx but never really taking my eye off the ball as a whole.
If---- and its a big if--- I were to pack up doing "it all" and concentrated on the one specie I reckon it would be to concentrate wholly on fly fishing for game fish/trout .!

Yes, of course, that's what big fish fishing is all about, I'm not sure if I would go Eel fishing again when it reached - temperatures ?

It would be nice to catch a twenty pound carp, and that is one of my targets this season.
Now I'm fishing some where that is possible I will be trying for one.
But I will still be float fishing for what ever comes along,
And also feeding floating dog biscuits for a few hours to get the carp confident on them.
That seemed to work ok last year.

I would indeed be prepared to forsake all other species IF, the target species was 'hot' throughout the season. There are no target species that fit that bill and also twist my lemon, so whilst the theory says yes, the reality says no.

Unless you are fishing for predators, it is very difficult to de select all other species, bait wise or venue wise, it aint gonna happen. Two donkey choker boilies might make you think you have and then surprise surprise, in comes a big bream , a pike or an eel. Best to target by venue and fish through, especially on the river, so the likelihood is increased. Ihave fished for single species but have never been able to or wanted to exclude everything else. I hunted a group of carp that were escapees from Ecton with some success, but caught loads of bream in the process, didnt mind one bit.

For a few years, big roach and tench were the only target, but every now and then I'd need a diversionary confidence boost. TBH, it's what made me bin fishing for a while - I forgot that it's supposed to be fun, too. Even when my tench target scraped home at a level 8lb (a north-eastern fish; Teesside, believe it or not) it hardly raised a flutter. I never did get my two and a half pound roach, but not for want of trying, mind. I admire those who have the fortitude to wait it out, but it ain't for me; not any more.

No I would get bored to death if I only went for one fish all year round.

I may spend part of the year chasing individual species eg. Spring after Tench or a winter after large Roach or spend my Autumn months after big Barbel; but never a whole season after just one fish or species.

I did spend a few years back in the 80s with a couple of mates chasing large Carp in the Colne valley and in Kent but I would often just be going through the motions and not really enjoying my fishing as much as I had been before I had started to specialised in Carp; and I used to miss the thrill of catching decent sized Barbel and Tench and Crucians etc. so I virtually gave up Carp fishing for quite a while and started to enjoy myself once more.

I do occasionally fish for Carp but they're just one species out of many that give me a lot of enjoyment, and these days I would rate a 20lb Carp no better than a near 2lb Roach or 6lb Tench or 10lb Barbel or 5 or 6lb Chub.

No. The nearest I've ever got was years ago when I was obsessed with tench and big roach from the Kennet......but even then it wasn't to the absolute exclusion of everything else.

The last few winters Ive spent exclusively chasing zander but that's because it was something different for me having never been that fussed about predators before and tthe challenge of doing something different appealed. About the only thing I've never had a serious crack at is carp....and they have never ever remotely interested me .

Far too many years fishing for carp. Now I mainly fish for roach (usually the Kennet or K&A canal) but so often end up catching other fish by accident. I'm quite happy catching dace, chub, trout, grayling, etc. I am very lucky to still be so enthusiastic and still enjoying my fishing. Some days I seem to spend just as much time bird watching as fishing.

I prefer variety in my fishing, but fishing for big roach could sway me if I found a local water that made it worthwhile.

I fall into one species only so can't comment specifically but wondered what species are you going to target ?
