Chub, would be my target species, could be cold, Tench unlikely, Bream river possibly, Barbel depends on weather and river levels, Chub reliable winter target along with Grayling, depends where you live.

If it's a cold winters day and the temperature is still falling then I would either stay in bed or go for the odd Chub which seem to feed when most other fish seem to be too lethargic to feed.

If the temperature has been fairly steady for the last couple of days or has risen a degree or two then I would tend to target Barbel & Chub or Roach & Dace, or Roach & Rudd if on a Stillwater.

If the temperature has reached 8 to 10 degrees or more then I might even think it's worth going after a Carp or two.

Bream? I'm not a great lover of them so I personally would not give them a thought. LOL.

Tench? I will normally wait till March before I even start to think about targeting them.

Keith
