What are your views on using barbel rods up to 1.50 _ 1.75tc for carp as the carp I go for are only up to 20lb ish max and my 2.75tc shimano carp rods arnt much fun playing them on plus Im only casting 60yrd max and good for chucking a 1oz lead about. anybody else use barbel rods for them I find them lighter and better for casting too.

I use 12Ft Wychwood Rouge 1.75 barbel rods for tench fishing. A barbel rod is just a Avon type rod with barbel written on it. Also used them as light pike rods.

Depends on the water that you are fishing, if it is heavily weeded or snaggy then I would say no but if the water is fairly clear I see no problem in using a 1.75 rod as long as it doesn't prolong the fight to much which would not be good for the fish.

I do usually use my Carp rods when I am Carp Fishing, but having said that I have occasionally used my 1.75lb barbel rods for catching Carp and have also used my multi-tip specialist rod (with either its 1.5lb tip or its 2lb tip on).
I've caught Carp up to over 22lb on these rods without ever feeling that I was under gunned or that the hook hold could fail at any time.

We used to use 10ft 1.5lb test curve split cane Carp rods in the past and both **** Walker and Chris Yates caught their record Carp on these; and our modern carbon Barbel and Specialist rods are better rods than them, and as long as you are not fishing at long range or fishing in a jungle of snags then I think they are quite capable of controlling decent sized Carp.

I use 1.25tc daiwa avons for carp fishing all the time. Like you, 60-ish yards is probably the furthest I'd ever go (tbh I generally have at least one if not both rods in the margins). As for weights - usually 1oz method feeders or 1oz bombs + small PVA mesh bag, so I guess a 2oz loading.

If I'm overgunned somewhere it's probably in the line strength - I use 12lb mainline and 10lb hooklength. I don't fish particularly snaggy areas but at the end of the day, you need to use tackle that will land the fish safely. Also, this comes into play when trying to get the fish landed safely and - relatively - quickly. A prolonged fight is not what I'm after.

That said, I do like to feel the rod bend when I play one. My avons are soft, they'll bend all the way to the handle. Really good fun, whether the fish is 5 or 20 pounds.

Thought so then I can also use them on the river I can get 2 korum 1.75 barbel rods for £80 which are decent rods for the money I'll only be using 10lb line also and the waters i fish are pretty clear.
I might use them with just normal feeder reels too and just slacken the drag off slightly till i pick the rod up.just need to remember to tighten drag up when I pick it up

Yeah that would work. I would say baitrunners are a blessing though, especially when you've got two rods in at the same time. Slack clutch will do the same thing, as long as you always remember :)

I have a pair of 1.75lb Shimano Hyperloop barbel rods that I've used for carp, but find them a bit stiff in the middle, making the carp bolt when the rod suddenly locks up. A slower-actioned rod (a 1.75lb Quantum Old School Light is ideal) is better at short to medium range. Funnily enough, I got a pair of 1.6lb Youngs Ray Walton barbel rods for exactly the same kind of carping as you've described and they're damn-near perfect for the job.

The only drawback is that these rods won't chuck a jaffa-sized method ball or a big PVA bag any real distance, but you can spod or spomb the feed out with one of your carp rods so it's not really an issue. I use a 2.75lb Wychwood Rogue with a smallish spod and it works just fine.

I use my greys prodigy one and a half pounds test curve for floater fishing.
Get a good fight on it, bends right to the butt.

They are cracking rods I have two, had carp, barbel and even a sixteen pound salmon on them.

Make a good feeder rod too with the quiver top fitted. If I had to pick just one rod too fish with it would probably be one of these.

Nova, you are certainly enthusiastic about acquiring tackle judging by all the enquiries from rods to reels and meat cutters etc.
I think you will agree that folk on here are very helpful and friendly..as I have found.

When you get sorted will you stay on here and let us all know of your experiences and catches. I am sure you will, not like some that have come on and then disappeared when they have found what they are looking for.:)

Forums need new blood to flourish.
