As I mentioned in the HDYGO thread my much loved Harrison Specialist mysteriously broke yesterday about 6 inches from the tip ring. Clean break. This is only its 7/8 outing.

I'd like to think this was a fault\flaw in the blank but I guess I've probably done something to it without realising. I certainly dont remember anything but either way it's broken and it wasn't a cheap rod.

So...is it repairable ? Never had one go quite that far from the tip before. A couple of inches and I'd just reposition the tip....a cheap rod and I'd bin it..

Anybody successfully repaired one like this....or had one repaired ? Did it hold up ?

Skippy, if you phone Harrisons and ask to speak to the manager "Tiz" I would imagine he'll get you a new top section made up. I've been in Harrisons and dealt with him and he's sound.

I doubt that you will be happy with a repaired section and personally I would take Tigger's advice.

I have successfully repaired a few broken rods for people by making an internal spigot but it has always been on the lower sections I can see that you could fix it, but it would most probably result in a flat spot.

Skippy,

You won't get a repair for it mate, to near the tip, and even if it was half way down the section, you wouldn't get a good repair and the action just wouldn't be the same.

Harrison will be able to replace the top section i am 100% sure about that, and you won't know the difference.

If you have any problems, let me know, but i would say if you took it back to the shop where you got it, they will sort it for you.

I hope so mate. It's your local shop but a bit of a trek for me.

As Ian say phone Harrison's up they'll make you a new section for the rod. They are the only company that I know of that retain all the blank mandrills they've ever made rods up on.
You may have to send them about 9 inches of the female section (overfit end) so they get a prefect fit for the lower section. But that's a small inconvenience for getting the rod back to as good as it was when you bought it.

I've had over the years I've had my GTI float rod (20+ years), two new top sections made up because I've broke them. Not cheap Harrisons but the after sale are second to none.

That rod sounds like Trigger's broom.

Before you go to the expense of ordering a new tip section, it might be worth considering a repair...

A couple of seasons ago, I had an accident with my Daiwa Amorphous waggler rod, snapping the top 4/5 inches off the tip, which included the tip ring and the next one down. I tried to 'spigot' it with a short section of carbon quivertip, but it wasn't right.

What I ended up doing was bridging the gap by using the tube part of a tip ring I bought for the purpose. I found a tip ring which fitted the broken ends, used a hacksaw to cut off the tube part of the ring, and glued this in place. Provided the section of tube is only 6mm or so, you will struggle to notice any flat spot, and because the repair weighs next to nothing, you won't feel any difference or lose any length.

For the sake of a couple of quid and a little trouble, you could be back in action, and the old wallet will be left practically unmolested.

If the worst comes to to the worst, you can still buy a new section, but this little dodge may well be worth a go first.

I also agree with Ian, Harrisons have an incredibly good after sales service. As you posted, it must have developed some sort of fault. My two Specialists are over 10 years old, well traveled/used and are still as good as new after a few hundred sessions.

Thanks for this chaps. I'll try the shop first then Harrisons.

I hear what you say Jerry but if there was a fault then surely it would have gone sooner than this ? Like I said I do not recall doing anything that might have weakened the blank but it snapped like a rotten carrot under no pressure other than the weight of the lead. Most disconcerting as these are not thin walled blanks.

Skippy,

If you get any problems trying to get the rod back to the shop, Then i can arrange and meet up with you half way, and I will take the rod to the shop for you. Just let me know, on the plus side, the lads in the shop maybe able to get you a new section quicker.

Strange, i had this happen to me once, not on a Harrison. The rod just went, but it was the Butt section. The break was clean as if it had been cut clean with a knife, not a strand anywhere.

Thanks Ray. It's not really that far it's just finding the time to do it....and its a good shop which I fancy having a rummage around again. If I get any grief I'll threaten them with you but they seem good lads in there. I think a new section is the only real option.
