Homemade Boilie - Shelflife or Freezer

Started making my own Boilies with various recipes using the usual 50/50 mix. with various added ingredients, but are without 'Eggs' total.

So does this mean they as 'Shelf Life' or they still need to be 'Frozen'.

Depends on the ingredients mate, are you still boiling your baits; what ingredients are you using?

Yes still boiling them for approx. 60/90secs

Marmite, molasses, Soy or oyster sauce, red krill flavouring along with one or two more and crushed bird seed dried after boiling etc..

Other ingredients may include golden syrup, crushed hemp, hemp oil, a few supermarket food flavouring powders, sea rock salts and rice or maize flour.

Basically anything with a strong flavour and nothing associated with eggs.

Still shelf life.
By excluding eggs your basically making the bait easier to digest, no bad thing! A recipe without eggs also allows the flavour to leech out but boiling adds water to the mix which makes them perish.


  • Commercially produced boilies have preservatives put in - to extend shelf life

  • Freezer baits usually don't contain preservatives and rely on extended shelf life - through freezing.

Freezing can rupture the cellular make up of proteins, denatures them and kills useful/beneficial bacteria which fish like.

Best boilie?
Properly air dried, made without eggs or preservatives! :thumbs:

*substitute gluten for eggs
** Rehydrate air dried boilies before use

Seen some when making their own boilies, they bake them in an oven instead of boiling.

Would this be a better option.

As an example, what would the commercials add as preservative, and you say to 'Rehydrate air dried boilies before use'. How would you suggest.

You could put them in the oven on lowest heat setting or use a food dehydrator but its best to simply air dry naturally (in the rare English sun).

I wouldn't advocate using any sort of unnatural preservative.

As for rehydrating boilies; you could simply use lake water or salt water, molasses, hemp juice, particle juice, amino acids dissolved in cold water see HERE
