Personally I'll give any type of fishing a go

Carp, fly (my casts usually end up at my feet), general pleasure, I've tried match fishing (not very good), river, pond, pole, waggler and feeder

But today it seems those coming into fishing choose one branch of the sport and stick to it.

There are carp anglers who have never fished any way except behind rods and buzzers, pole anger who have never picked up a rod, match anglers who are only interested in match fishing - is the all-round angler a dying breed?

I made a similar comment recently that there seemed to be fewer good all rounders in Angling.

I'm not knocking anyone for specialising, it's up to them but I do think they miss out on such a lot of enjoyment and wider experience by doing so, I think I would get bored fairly quickly if I stuck to only one or two species or methods of fishing.

I also think people learn a lot from other disciplines which they can use to good effect in a certain specialised one.

I say live and let live.
Targeting one species or style of fishing has never appealed to me, there's no way I would ever be able to put the time and effort in. It would never suit my mentality.

I like to dabble in an all round style, I'm also happy just being an also ran just happy to be playing.
I am more than a little disappointed that boat fishing is now beyond me as I loved sea fishing.

Just as a PS I get the idea when the anglers of today reach their end then angling will reach it's end.
The newer anglers are just not coming through to match the numbers there used to be.
Licence sales tell us that.

I agree, I prefer to be rubbish at all styles of fishing rather than be specially rubbish at just one style.:wh

On second thoughts, I might concentrate my efforts and specialise in blanking.

I quite recently refiled all my blank days into specimen days. I'm only a few more blanks, sorry specimen days, from a drennan cup winner.
Even more prestigious the FM Tench Challenge!

Good plan, set yourself Achievable Objectives, so say the Experts.
You gonna tick the box as "done" after one (proof of principle), or really go for it and get a bivvy?

You could always start a Blanking Specialist Group - specialising on different kinds of Fisheries - according to some people - some commercials are impossible to blank on - go on - prove them wrong!:D

I have managed to blank overstocked commercials, also on overpriced, over stocked trout lakes, when out sea fishing. I like blanks it stops my wife going on about smelly nets.
In fact I could be the founding member of the empty net club.

I like catching fish. Big or small, it's all the same to me. However, if I can't get big, I'd prefer plenty of them. I'd rather wade through a load of tiddlers for a big one than sit it out for the single big fish. That generally means that I'll fish for whatever is most likely to be caught, given the prevailing conditions, in the venues available to me.

I have occasionally done one particular thing almost to the exclusion of all others. Unfortunately, I tend to get sick of that particular thing and go back to other species or tactics until something else takes my fancy. Without a concious decision to do so, I've ended up doing exactly the kind of seasonal fishing that was once so prevalent amongst anglers. I tend to target different species, the most appropriate ones, at different times of year. I've no intention of ever again banging my head against brick walls chasing summer species in the depths of winter.

However, one of the few thing that I have found to be pretty constant is my desire to be trotting. The baits and specific parts of the river will alter depending on weather and season though.

I don't really know or care if that makes me an all rounder. I'm not particularly concerned with being lumped into any particular group, even a more general one.

No, mate; that club's been going as long as recreational fishing has.:)

I recall a story in an old angling book about a gent who'd set up and "fish," his gaily decorated perch bob riding the ripples while he leant back against a tree. The bloke didn't like fish overmuch, but enjoyed the tranquillity and (most importantly) the time away from his wife, so he fished without bait, safe in the knowledge that his solitude would be unbroken.
