hi guys, i know i have not posted here much from when i joined (things n stuff not giving me a lot of time on the water) but ive just got myself a boat , it been many years sense ive last owned a boat and after much looking , almost 2yrs looking in fact, i think i found the right boat for me, its a 1995 Staempfli 19, 20ftx6.6ft foward cabin and loads of deck space, 40 evinrude, came with trailer, and should be just the trick for big lakes (i live on L.derg, lower shannon) in irish weather n for close shore/estuary fishing once im more adept at sea fishing, a few pics(before i launch in june).. PS 8hp trolling engine to go on before launch... for pics>>>> www.fishingmagic.com/forums/members/maurice-walsh-albums.html

Lucky you, looks ideal for what you have in mind. It is a point of interest how many people in Australasia have their own boat versus UK/Ireland. Nearly every one of my immediate neighbours has a decent boat parked on the driveway.

Boats are money pits and you cannot just turn up at a lake and launch! Indeed most of our lakes have no facilities to do so. Had a boat for sea fishing and do not want another!

ill mostly be using it on the shannon/derg as a means to get to islands and shoreline miles away from roads, locate shoals of bream/silvers(hopefully) via fishfinder, feed, get set up and then bag up:rolleyes::D, once launched she wont be out again until winter, i would have use of friends boats but they are mostly open lakeboats with small engines for trolling, and not fit for weather should/when it rolls in, even in summer on the derg wind n rain can hit very hard very quickly, hence the cabin

That sounds great. You have wide open spaces and plenty of lakes and waterways which are perhaps best fished from a boat.

Good luck with it!

Sure, not talking about turning up at your local commercial with a 6 metre boat complete with twin 140 hp and a pint of maggots! However, wish I'd had the opportunity to target predators on UK rivers from a boat, even a small one. It would have been a game changer.

Thanks mike, a lot of the derg/bottom half of the shannon has limited access in anything but a boat, i sounded the area for yrs and ghillied for a lot of that time and found that the bulk of the shoals are far from the lakeside thus a boat is the way to go for me on the days ill get out, which will be limited in all honesty, but a little spare cash was floating and now will be afloat:D, it will get more use trolling for pike i suspect but hey ho, and the odd non fishing overnight at a lakeside hostelry with a sherbet or 20 just for the hell of it:D:D:D

as you say mighty, but there are many smallish lakes (from 3 to 50/60 acres) within an hr of me (google the, east clare lakelands) that have access for a boat , so if i was of a mind i could launch on maybe 30/35 of these, most ive fished from shore mostly and sometimes by boat, no shortage of accessible water around me, spoilt for choice if i had the time :D

Enjoy Maurice. Time is the killjoy of all hobbies! However it is truly limited and we must make the most of it. I will google the area you mentioned and one day will travel to Ireland for some fishing.

Tight lines

Maurice, that a really nice gesture, top man.
I once built a boat of my own back in the mid eighties. It was a winter project to get me away from all the rubbish on t v that I hated ( soaps n stuff).
I bought the plans from indespension of Bolton who specialised in trailers, but, for some reason they had a boat plan that was perfect for my needs, space available, etx. It had a cathederal hull, built in two haves, (I suppose I made two really) with all the trimmings, thwarts, strakers, squeegee between the two halves that bolted together. Oars and seagull outboard completed the job, I was really pleased with the result that I intended using on waters I had at the time.
Sadly I never nad chance to use it (trials prooved it fine) as I moved house and had a few years of serious improvements to see to.
It featured in the old Specialist angler mag, a tackle dealer retiring to live by the side of the Shannon in Ireland bought it and hopefully its still afloat on the river somewhere.
Look out for it Maurice , its called Piscator and is coulored green.
