Just picked up the sad news of the death of Jimmy Randall. He passed away yesterday.

Jimmy was one of the greats in the Southern Match Angling Scene. Very much one of the key lights in Roding Valley Anglers which went on to become the backbone of Essex County.

As a youngster, who used to go watch open matches on the Medway, Jimmy was a "hero"...and always open to give advice.

I remember a very eye-opening coach trip to Leicester for a national meeting of the Match Anglers Council (how many of you remember those days???). I had "bunked" off school for a couple of days...picking up the coach to Leicester at Hendon. Much of the journey up involved Jimmy's detailed explanation of his "snip"....to a rapt audience.

He was good enough to be picked for the England in the World Championships 1972...in a team that came 2nd.

There's a longer report on the canals and Rivers trust website.
