Here was I thinking that ours was the gentle art. I have just been browsing the Specialist a brochure sent out by one of the large mail order tackle retailers.

I realised some of the product names are far from gentle.....

Black Op rods,Scope sawn off rods, H gun rods, Longbow carp rods,Warrior rods,Command and control rods,Armalite rods,Outcast rods,Riot big pit reels, Juggernaut and H gun barrows, Black Ops Rapid Deploy bivvies......the list goes on.

I wonder what the naming and marketing reasoning is.
Still I suppose the names are good for a laugh at.:D

It is because if you are a carp angler you are "well 'ard" - what nonsense!

It's a sure fire way of getting me to avoid anything with such a name.

Scope, Ops, Deploy... WTF?

I want to feel like I'm going out to winkle a few roach, not going out equipped to fight Armageddon :)

I could not agree more! Bluntly what stupid names when compared to say, marksman, acolyte, puddle chucker and supero!

I would not buy them because of their name. Many adverts have the same effect; moneysupermarket to name but one:)

I had to deliberate over the Marksman name Mike, it suggested to me something to do with guns which in turn would make me the biggest hypocrite this side of Jupiter.

However...

Mansfield Brewery used to produce a multi-award winning lager called Marksman so I'm going with that instead and claiming the technicality especially as it's my home town and was, for many years, my home brew.

We were practically brought up on it! :)

It can have that connotation but to me it implies accuracy whether with a gun, bow or rod. That innate ability to cast a feeder or a float with incredible accuracy just like the writing ability like what I have got!:wh

It isn't just the word marksman it is the combination of Hardy Marksman that makes clear that it is a tool for fishing Binka. I like the sound of that beer; Marstons Pedigree or Timothy Taylor's Landlord are my favourite brews and are both aptly named.

So many names on various items of tackle are quite ridiculous when you think about them. However, the current trend for "tactical" is absurd. The sad thing is, it's not just fishing gear in which this trend exists.

I couldn't agree more!

For some reason whenever I used to search for a fishing waistcoat in respect of what many of us would imagine one to be, many of the results would come back for "tactical vest".

Tactical vest?

The mind boggles...

People seem to avoid me when they see my Leeda Grim Reaper?
My Maver Assassin has the same effect.....

I once watched a bloke eeking out bits with a Medusa, it was that boring it almost turned me to stone :eek:mg:

TAXI!

Sadly, I've worn genuine tac vests. There wasn't much fishing involved and my "rod" was fairly short and went bang if prodded the right way.;):D

Try to avoid buying the tac vests with no pockets other than those front and back that hold a very thick and heavy lump of metal. They don't make good fishing vests.;):D

The amount of tackle you break, It's like Armageddon :D:D

Don't forget Target, it's a line made by Garner, but it's bloody good stuff.

I have to agree that some of the names are a little bit stupid, but what would you call these products ??

I can't see many anglers walking into a shop saying, have you the new Daisy Rod from Hardy :eek:mg:

Agreed. IMO one of the worst names is the Daiwa Yank N Bank.

Seriously, what where they thinking?

Names like that would now prevent me from even looking at a product, I'm only angling two seasons now, and the only regrets I have is having to use permanent marker to blank out names on rods, such as Devil, on the Abu Devil rods I first bought, our young ones see more than enough inappropriate language in the media on a daily basis without using it for branding.

I also bought a bicycle that I only take out at night or when I have to because I thought the branding would peel off when I got it home, sadly it is engraved in the frame and handlebars and would be too costly to remove, Voodo Mountain bike, thought this was becoming a trend so my latest purchases were chosen as best as I could to avoid such advertising, did I succeed, almost, I now have a rod with Savagegear on it and am looking for a gold coloured permanent marker or a sticker to cover it up, it really is wide spread and can influence the young mind in ways an older one can just laugh off.

Regards, john

It's not a new thing. Looking through some mags from 20 years ago, some of the heavy poles and a few of the rods had aggressive sounding names, like Assassin, Vindicator, Terminator and Bullet.

Any guesses as to when they'll bring that model back under the name of a "Leeda Putin"? :D

I'll subscribe that. Mansfield Bitter! Loopy Ale we used to call it. Claimed more than a few of my brain cells in the past. Luckily I don't appear to have missed them. Pete.
