I'm after a small short session rucksack in an attempt to cure my habit of taking way too much gear. It must be big enough to get reel, tackle, bait & flask in but that's all. I made the mistake of buying a big one years ago which I naturally filled and then could hardly lift so I do not want a great big one.....35-40 litres tops.

Ideally everything I need goes in the rb leaving both hands free to carry a lightweight chair and my eel repellent spray.

I was much impressed with Clarkies Thinking Anglers Manbag but its quite pricey...as is the Aqua which I also liked. Other ones I've looked at are

Nash Compact
Gardner Specialist
Korum

TBH I'm not that fussed on the Korum...I didn't find it terribly comfortable. Ideally the thing would have stiff sides so it stood upright.

Anybody got either of the above or any other helpful suggestions ?

I'm not sure which Korum one you looked at, but I've got the compact ruckbag and think it's great. For me it's a good combo of right size, very well made and comfy. I also like the compartments (inside and out) to keep some sort of order in the chaos.

I have the Korum ITM daysack and it's sound for me. I've only used it for river fishing and I can fit all I want in it ok, landing net hangs on a clip, unhooking mat (if you take one) , a jacket etc can be strapped on the top. You could strap a marksman barbel rod ( as it's not too long) in tube and a couple of banksticks on the top also if you wanted to.

I found Korum bags far better than any of their rucksacks, but each to their own.

I have had a number of rucksacks over the years, and found that most were not that comfortable when loaded. The best for comfort come at a price.

Trakker is a good buy thats 45lt and still cost around £55. Other smaller rucksacks cost the same or more than the Thinking Anglers.

I can get you a price on the Thinking Anglers Skip ?

30-40ltrs sounds a big bag to me do you need one as big. If you are not carrying much the tackle bag from Aldi I find is big enough. If not I would recommend a visit to your local camping store.

It is not a rucksack but the NGT tackle bags have an over the shoulder strap and are perfect in my book at around £12 on Amazon. Have a look :)

I have the trakker 50 litre, I know it's bigger than you said but even fully loaded it's comfortable because it has a proper strap system like the ruffy tuffy squadies use. I hang me chair off the D rings at the front leaving two hands free to carry me rods, open gates and break me fall when I slip in cow sh1t.

I have a Nash job. Although its well made I find it too floppy. I have to stick a bankstick through the small extra carry handle and into the ground to stop it rolling over.
The best was t Gardener which was stiffer.

I have the Korum roving back pack or what ever they call it. It was about £35. I get all my hooks, feeders and other tat in the front pocket, the flask goes in one of the elasticated pouches on the side, and the rest all in the main compartment, I also roll up my unhooking mat and put it in the loops at the top. Ideal in my opinion, but I still carry far too much.

Skippy, I have a very useful wooden box that I could be persuaded to part with if the price is right. It is narrow enough to carry over the shoulder comfortably and a has padded seat it has three remove able drawers a main compartment and a built in float/accessory box. I think you may have seem it in action on the bank. lol.

It's an exceptional piece of work, Ray but not quite what I'm looking for. I'm amazed you've not been approached by someone wanting to market it.

Maybe that is too big. I need to go look in my local shop to get an idea of size. Too big would defeat the point and too small is just...er....not big enough.

I was looking for the same sort of rucksack last year and ended up buying Korum Tactical Bag. Its light and carriers what I need for a day’s fishing or an evening on the river think it was around £35.00
And a plus is it is waterproof which I found out when it slipped into the cannel

Skipping through the replies , I didn't see the Drennan Super Specialist mentioned. I think mine is 25L, a no nonsense quality piece of kit. No zips to rust or seize up,a solid waterproof base which carries on a little up the sides. Highly recommend.

Skippy,

I know it's not a ruck sack - and you have probably heard these mentioned before - but the small fishing bags which Aldi have on offer seem to encourage me to lighten the load on day sessions or when roving the bank trying to find that elusive double figure barbel on the river Severn.

https://www.aldi.co.uk/fishing-bag/p/070737050029100

I still have to carry a separate rod bag with the rod / reel / banksticks etc but these small bags are not too bad at all - and cheap as chips - which can't be bad.

The most comfortable rucksack I have is a genuine army one, it's waterproof also having a built in film of rubber or plastic on the inside of the material. Only downside is that there's no individual pockets inside or out, it's just one big space. You can zip on rocket pouches (which I have) which are smaller sausage shaped rucksacks. There's a separate yoke to use the rocket pouches so you can use them as a smaller rucksack on their own....they're far more robust and comfy to use than any fishing rucksack but as I said they just lack the little pockets etc.

I've had both the bog standard army rucksack and something very like the ones Aldi do and they are not what I'm after. I have a compact Trakker carryall which is great but not desperately comfortable to carry & maybe just a tad too compact. I wanted to try a rucksack so I've got both hands free but it has to be fairly small and above all comfortable to wear.

I'll have a look around today but I was impressed with Ray's TA rucksack if not by the price.Seems a lot for a bloody bag !
