What is the intended purpose for the net?

I have a telescopic trout landing net, manufactured by a New Zealand company, McLean's, and it is perfect for river fishing as it folds away neatly and easily and also has a telescopic handle.

I use one of these for a lot of my fishing, but NOT the one you are looking at, and although it looks okay I cannot comment on something I haven't seen...

I have read the blurb with yours and the only thing I'm not too sure about is the ' push button to release the net ' element. Personally, I don't like ' buttons ' as they offer the chance of failing / clogging with mud / water etc. etc. and I wouldn't buy for that reason. You however, might like such things !!
I have bought supposedly ' great but cheap ' of these in the past and they haven't lasted ( on one the handle eventually fell apart )..............

For this reason I stick with those made by Abu Garcia which basically fold down to the length of the net ( they come in three sizes as far as I recall ) - something like 60cm on my particular model. The net is released by pulling back the block below the net and is virtually fool proof - IMHO !!
Mine, because I look after it has lasted for years so I would stick with this manufacturer, known for quality products over the years. The downside is that they are ( possibly ) twice the price of your model, but that would deter me as I like quality...

Many on the market from what I can see so make a choice and buy one - you can always send it back if it's not up to standard !

Good luck !

Morning Peter .

Main reason is wanting to reduce what i carry and make it all as portable as possible i have got cheesed off with the normal coarse fishing load you end up dragging around so have reduced it down but the landing net is still the big PITA to carry .

I have switched to a Pin for the reel everything now fits in one of the Aldi fishing bags plus a small fold up stool rod and net would like to reduce the net thats the main reason plus i am moving away from pools and getting onto the rivers so portability for trotting is a big aim ..

Thanks

Morning PG,

In that case a folding net is probably the best bet.

These days any net and handle from a competent manufacturer should suffice. The McLean nets are quite expensive, but for coarse fishing then a decent sized net and maybe a Drennan super specialist telescopic handle will work well.

I feel sure that is the one I have. The pole is seven sided and I bought the largest net. It is light , folds down to a small size and appears very well made. I only used it once or twice as it was far too big for the small carp, f1's and roach I was catching at a commercial. I have kept it for when I go roving!!!;)

For the money you cannot really go wrong. I bought from Amazon. If you want any more info let me know! This is a link to the one I bought;

I have an abu folding net but can'tsee any on ebay at the moment. The shakespear agility folding nets look good in the pic and description but I haven't seen them in the flesh (so to speak). I think i'd take the gamble and get one though as shakespear seem to be doing decent gear again.

I feel sure that is the one I have....

This looks the same as the Aldi one I have reccomended on other threads - iirc £6.99 - excellent as an emergency net to keep in the boot for the odd occasion that you leave your main net propped-up by the back door!:eek:mg:

Only problem with using it as a clip-on net whilst wading - it needs both hands to erect it or extend it :)o -Oohh er missus!) - if you are trying to do this whilst holding a rod with a fighting fish on the end of the line and knee-deep in a torrent - can prove tricky!

A 'flick-up' 'clip-on' trout net maybe more practical - only prob with the ones currently available is the nets are too coarse - only one step from being old-fashioned 'knotted'!

If only someone would make one with the fine rubberised modern mesh netting - unfortunately this doesn't seem to 'hang'/fold as well as the cheaper coarse netting:eek:mg:

I agree with the comments of Greenie2 in that this net definitely needs 2 hands to open it. It is a two handed affair to uncouple the collapsed head to allow it to unfold. I tried it in the garage this morning and I struggled! If I was in a river with a rod in hand I would end up soaked.

You could have it opened up with the handle retracted but even then it is a two handed job to loosen and tighten the parts of the handle after extending it.

I might have a go tomorrow when I have time to see what I can achieve;)

If you are like me you will have a back up for a back up !

Almost yes .

I am thinking of not rejoining the pool i belong to in the new year as it is being to my mind ruined by certain members that want concrete and that all over the place and paths covered in a 2 inch deep gravel layer which i find dangerous it is staring to look like my pet hate a commie so all my nets that i reserve for there will be coming into backup duty ..

Oh Well S**t happens ..
