"We would like re-assurance from the Environment Agency that rigorous monitoring will take place and that no work will be carried out until at least two years of baseline data has been collected."
Personally I would not think that a 2 years monitoring period would result in reliable data at all . . . . many scientific studies are undertaken over a 5 to 10 years period in order to obviate the possible rare events that nature so often throws up, for instance:
A poor year class of breeding due to so many possible reasons,
a rogue year of weather, or floods
or even the occasional pollution incident upstream of the location.
I wonder if there is any chance of agreeing a more lengthy period of study?
