I was really pleased to read the account of grayling fishing on the news and features thread, and particularly the endorsement of modern tackle, especially carbon rods.

How lucky and fortunate we are to have modern perfectly made tools for every job in hand, and mostly at a very good price.

The bean pole comment is really good. No harm in folk dressing up in strange clothes with broom stick rods, in a way it's brave, like heading off to a show in morris dancing gear.

But I rejoice each time I use a carbon rod - pure magic.

I've never used a cane rod, but I wouldn't mind trying one, just for old times sake, chap at the local tackle shop has a cane float rod I can borrow, might give it a go for some crucians, when the weather warms up.
Should go well with my match ariel, shall definitely give it a try.

I grew up with old tackle give me modern any day. Still have the odd nostalgia day with cane just to prove to myself how lucky we are now.

What gets me are those that say fish welfare is paramount, and go fishing with something that today's tackle knocks straight into a cocked hat:):wh

I still get enjoyment from using my B.James & Son MKIV Carp rod together with either a Mitchell 300 or an ABU Cardinal 55 or even one of my Pins but only because it still brings back some really good memories and can be great fun; I caught my very first Barbel back in 1975 and my very first double figure Carp back in 1973 and my very first big Pike in 1974 using this tackle; however I'm under no illusion that split cane is anywhere near as good as one of my more modern carbon fibre rods which I use 98% of the time.

What's vintage? The oldest carbon rods are getting on for 40 years old; the baitrunner's been around for over 30 years, too. I've got plenty of vintage carbon.:D

I still have a few hollow fibreglass rods, but can't think of any occasions when I'd choose to use them on performance grounds alone. The polyestel Alphas were arguably one of the best, being appreciably lighter than their competitors (and only a couple of ounces more than the first carbon rods), but fish with one on a breezy day and the advantages of a stiffer, slimmer carbon rod become immediately obvious.

Cane looks lovely in photographs and devotees rave about its playing qualities, but why does it have to be so bloody heavy ;)

What's that got to do with fish welfare? Those who fish with cane rods and centre pin reels aren't using anything more injurious to fish than any modern gear is.

Even traditional-style landing nets are increasingly being fitted with modern micromesh netting.

Not at all sure what you're getting at with that statement?

I don't do nostalgia on the bank, I see stuff around in my tackle that brings back memories if I think about it.
Most of the stuff I have kept is nothing but rubbish, old but not of any quality.
There's no way I would want to use anything resigned to my room. I have one wall of current gear the rest is bobbha and certainly not for use.
Give me carbon every day of the week. I like shiny.
By the way my wife describes my room as, it looks like someone has kicked a bin over.
