I'm a bit of a creature of habit and tend to use a Kamasan B983 for just about everything, today I found its limits when taking low double figure carp off the surface using hair rigged dog biscuits. On more than one occasion the hook straightened when hooking a bigger fish.

What's out there that's stronger but still lightweight for this type of fishing?

drennan specialist wide gape hook .

Drennan International

use these hooks for river fishing for chub and roach etc also on commies for roach and carp along with tench too , never had a problem yet

but then woiuldnt use a wide gape for maggots for roach obviouslly but for bigger mouths like carp tench chub would use a wide gape .

Drennan super spade, they won't open out unless you've foul hooked a fish or hooked a snag. They're sort of an in between gauge and weight.

Cheers Tigger but I need an eyed hook, dont have the skills to tie a hair on a spade hook.

I'm slowly working my way through a whole stack of hooks that I've got (went a bit mad in the tackle shop late last year)

I'm currently using Guru MWG hooks and they seem pretty strong but not over heavy. Your idea of heavy and mine may be totally different but you might want to give them a look.

Kamasan animals are available in eyed as well as spades, I use them in the spade end version and they're excellent hooks! They're slightly wider gape than the super spades but are super strong and about medium gauge wire... very similar to the super spades. Don't let the shinny colour put you off them, I use them just as often as I use the super spades and catch just as many fish with them.

You can see them in the link below...

Just looked at those on the Angling Direct site to find only 4 left in stock item has been discontinued by supplier ..

That's a shame mate, I ain't used em recently but we're always a very good reliable hook, might be wise to get what ever one can get :D

On the basis that tackle balance is a must; what rod and line will you be using?

I use either 6 or 8lb line depending on snags and normally use my Drennan Puddle Chucker rod.

the korum hooks are good hooks tad on the large and thick size compared to other hooks but would feel confident going after hard fighting carp on them

I did mention earlier on post 11 about looking at the kamasan b711 X strong wide gape hooks being a light patterned hook but very strong

Picked some up today , but was trying to tie a hair rig for a inline bolt maggot feeder rig but could not pass the line through the eye twice but on the drennan super specialist i could .

Yea I know what you mean,

2 choices : you eaither get stronger wired hooks IE Korda, Nash, Fox, Gardner, Attomic, Rig marrole, solar etc

Or use a lower diameter / breaking strain line

was making 4" rigs with 2 fake maggots on the end just in case i get played by smaller fish when tench fishing . was using 6lb braid , would of gone less but couldn't find any smaller . Ended up using a size 12 super specialist but looks more like a 14 .
