what are people choice for bigger fish like carp tench and the like ? I seen hooks with out turned and in turned eyes or just straight what are the advantages ? Mainly fish my baits on hair rigs .

was using drennan specialist yesterday where never had a fault but had 4 hook pulls to carp where on the lake max hook is size 12 but the carp go upto 28lb

Thanks in advance

Good idea , even though all my rigs I tie from scratch as I can't use braid due to rules and found 9lb hooklink is needed they don't half hang in there !

Just thought the drennan specialist is a fairly straight hook and maybe one with a curve shape may get hold into bottom lip better ?

Could do with a sharpening file though .

Thanks

Have a look at the Guru range of hooks, been trying these this season, and I'm quiet impressed with them, their pellet waggler hook is very strong, sharp incurved point on them.

Specialist = Super Specialist ? If so a bit of an 'Old fashioned' 'True' size hook and smaller than many/most 'modern' patterns. A 12 in A.N.Other make could well be much bigger.

I'm sure was specialist but may be super I can't remember . Thing is with the eyes is it better to have that straight , turned out or inward for hair rigs ....

The Korda size 12 looks a decent sturdy hook for carp in there 20's

I believe that hooks with inturned points are better for bolt type rigs but with set ups where you strike the hook home I prefer straight pointed hooks.

If I am using a bait like luncheonmeat, paste or sweetcorn with the hook buried inside it and where I like to have the hook point extruding from its side, or Im using caster with most of the hook buried inside it then I prefer to use a straight point together with a straight eye, but if I'm nicking the hook into the side of a bait or Im using a hair rig then I prefer an offset and inset point together with an inturned eye, I think that an exposed hook with an offset and inturned point is also better if I'm fishing over gravel too as it resists blunting a little more than a straight point does.

Fishings a funny ole game aint it. I recon the exact opposite Peter :)

I think for bolt rigs a straight point gives you a better chance of intiallly pricking /self hooking the fish than an inturned point.

In turned points are better for rigs where you strike as initial pricking/self hooking is less critical as your striking the hook home and then the inturned point gives a better hookhold for the fight.

In reality I doubt it makes a huge difference either way but thats how I see it anyway. :)

The Carp go to 28lb but they only allow hooks up to size 12 ? Sounds like the owners want to see their fish trailing tackle. Who creates these rules , its amazing !!!!

I know it's silly but it's mainly a match lake with bream , tench and silvers and slot of tench and they don't want tench and bream picking up size 8 hooks and causing damage and committee say size 12 been used for years and landed plenty of carp .

Yes but no good if match size 12 a lot smaller , got some Korda mixa hooks that are a straight eye , going to try that next

The fish don't half hang on though and all use is a 1.5 Avon rod it's quite a scrap ! Seems fed on something different !

Use 10lb mainline and 9lb hooklink on this water some even use 12lb mainline as can be snagy

So they think anything over size 12 will damage the mouth of a bream? ...& therefore its better to ban anything bigger than 12 and leave them in the mouth of a Carp instead.

committee say size 12 been used for years and landed plenty of carp

If they run to 28lbs then they Lost plenty too I suspect !

....sorry but they sound like they dont have a clue.

No offence to match men but the committee are mainly older match men and by sound of it don't like the typical carp angler . Even though I'm only using 1 rod and no alarms and as well a barbel rod too not a broomstick . I even got told to use a balance set up and was getting at my set up is too heavy I think ???

Oh well I know it's balanced for a good scrap as all was hit and hold in margins and all on dead reds too !

This does not surprise me and I suspect is the real reason why there is a hook size limit. They simply dont like Carpers and are so anti carp fishermen that they are even prepared to put their own stock at risk to try & dissuade them from fishing there. Quite appalling really when you think about it.

Even more reason to now float fish it with a boile.

Ha ha yes can see that but ban on boilies too lol

Was method feeder in margins that did the damage and instead reloading regular I just fed little and often over top with pellet and dead reads and corn was only max 2 ft from bank too , could easily stalk this lake too it's so empty

You can already see the next rules coming ..

- Bolie Ban
- Hair rig ban
- lead ban ...float only

Like I said ...float fish it. Use a bolie paste. Keep working round their ridiculous rules till they literally have to ban fishing with rod & line and thus shoot themselves in the foot as well.

Boilie ban already but can use pop ups and wafters , no leaders , no braid even and no alarms but ignore all that and it's a cracking lake . I go down other end from car park where all match men fish . Got to be they don't want to carry all there heavy seat boxes and poles and 8 rods with them that far . My theory is the carp will back away from the pressure and proved right on Sunday evening , spoke to a few by car park and bream and roach .

Had a 19lb 2 mirror out with various hook pulls but think got idea on what hooks to try
