I used to think a line clip was just a handy gadget to keep things tidy. Having read that it is used to guide your bait to the same range each cast, it makes me ask this question (at the risk of sounding really dim). How if a powerful run is made by a good fish do i avoid a break! because as i see it the clutch is rendered useless?

The wayI do itis to fold a small length of low B.S. (e.g. 4lb) powergum over the line and put this in the clip rather than the line itself. This has 2 advantages:-

1. If a powerful fish goes steaming off you can either grab a loose end and unclip, or if it's too fast/fiddly the powergum will break before the line.

2. You are not risking damaging your line by putting it in the clip.

I also mark the line with some very thin marker elastic so I can clip up again afterwardsif I do need to unclip for a fish.

Thanks Mike, that sounds like good advice, i'll try with a piece of elastic band until i can find some power gum ( i am in rural france), and mark the line with tippex.

Good luck with your fishing
