Can anyone remember the magazine, I think it was called ''Specialist Angler''. It was a glossy mag written for the big fish angler. I thought it was the best one available, and think it would be a goer if brought back.

It appealed to me on many levels, as I've always been a multi species big fish angler. I notice the big carp magazine (that costs about the same about as my monthly pension) is still going strong. Just wondered what others thought, and why it would or not be a success?

****y.

The very fact that it once existed, but doesn't now, suggests that it would be no more viable now than it was then. Publications tend not to cease when they are making good money. The reason why so many carp magazines exist is that there is a bigger market for them and greater potential revenues available.

One of the biggest problems I see is that an awful lot of those that might be interested in a more general specialist angling publication, myself included, won't actually put their hand in their pocket to actually buy it.

I do remember it ****y (only just :)) to much on line I fear for angling mags to be successful in todays techie age maybe although there is a new one called Catch Cult (awful name) that has been getting good reviews.

I have still got a few of them along with a pile of other fishing mags dating back to the early '70s. It was a good magazine.

The last two I remember was Coarse Angling Today and I think Coarse Angler, both were brilliant and I had a subscription for both,I for one miss them as over the years i've learnt of a lot of methods from them, without the sheer interest within the pages...

Pike Lines was always a decent read back in the days when I used to be a member of PAC (mid 90's).

IMO they're all niches which would be hard pressed to stand up to the demands of a commercial product, especially since the digital era very much took over but they serve their purpose well for single species/pursuit interest groups.

As much as I personally like to read a conventional magazine I'm surprised that any at all survive in this day and age and it's testimony to the fact that the two longest running popular weekly publications cover all aspects of fishing and try to cater for as wide a readership as possible.

I say that with a slight hesitation as, since they became preoccupied with carp many years ago, I have completely turned my back on them.

Coarse angling today was a good read for a while, and I had it on subscription. I do fancy trying out this catch cult.

Not really a specialist magazine but fallons angler is a quality publication

I think the magazine the OP is thinking of is Specialist Angling World; only three issues and preceded by Big Fish World of which there only seem to be seven issues. Both superb quality and not to be confused with similar titles from DHP or the Specialist magazine from the NASG. Both simply far too expensive to produce.

Over here in France there are any number of magazines dedicated to a particular species. I am looking at a bi- monthly glossy magazine entitled" Brochet. Sandre" or Pike. zander. It contains adverts but mainly for boats, holidays and tackle. Another deals with every aspect of fishing sea, course and game. Once again boat reviews feature heavily! Anyone fancy a Bénéteau Barracuda 9 from €63,000? There is also a mag dedicated to Perch which might interest our Binka! Apart from Decathlon Tackle is expensive here! Bonne journée !

Do you remember Midland Angler? A tabloid-size paper with excellent content. As opposed to the usual mix of adverts, adverts disguised as reviews, articles stuffed with product endorsements.... I used to buy it even though I lived out of its area in the northwest. And I seem to remember something similarly regional coming from Sheffield?

After we produced Carp Fisher for the Carp Society I was approached by Phil Smith to produce one for the then NASG, changed at the AGM to NASA. We called it Specialist Angler, Bruno Broughton was Editor, Dave Watson production and myself Advertising. The first issue had a Kingfisher on the front cover

Crow I think your spot on with the internet. But.

I do hate (with a passion) those made by chaps that sit in a green tent making rigs and talking endless rubbish about a recent blank. I want action, or some nice scenic fews of the place they're fishing. Don't they know just how boreing those types of clips are?:eek:mg:
Welcome to video blog number 104,957,60. On my local water.

However a lot of good stuff too. Carp and Alex, Urban banks with Alan Blair, that man is a carp catching machine.

The Specialist Angler was the NASA Magazine, Nasa was absorbed into what became the Angling Trust.

It's all there on the internet if you do a search.

Specialist angling world was probably the best mag i ever read. I have the first 2 issues..i didnt know there was a 3rd. Kevin Clifford was the editor if i recall well and the line up of writers was impressive to say the least and included some real angling legends. Shame it never made it.

I did a piece in one of the issues Mike, about building your own boat. It feutured one I made over a winter period over thirty years ago now that had a cathederal hull incorporated into it to cut down on laterel drift, super little thing that is still being used on a regular basis on the river Shannon in ireland.:)
