Not long now before I get my hemp n tare head on with a trip to the tidal Trent so, I called into my usual supplier to stock up but was a little surprised at how the cost as rocketed over the last two years. "Crop failure" was the answer I was given.
Anyone else experienced this when purchasing it of late ?.

The last time I purchased a bulk sack full the mice in the garage made short work of it over the winter months .
Now I only buy pre cooked ready baged stuff. , how much is a sack full these days?.

I used to buy a full 25 kilo sack for £14, granted it was long ago but the other day £21 could only purchase what looked like a big cushion cover full.

Hemp has been steadily rising in price for a good two or three years. Correspondingly, the quality seems to be diminishing. It's certainly not the inexpensive bait it once was. The last time I bought some (eighteen months or so) it was just shy of thirty quid for a 15Kg sack. I doubt the same sack full will be much less than £35.

Sam Vines, that's an interesting point that you have raised - in recent years the quality of hemp has worsened. Anyone else found this and what is the reason? Also it takes longer to cook properly and there is less white showing.

I'm only talking seeds for the hook here, but yes, the quality has dropped with seeds seemingly getting smaller and smaller. I use a fair amount of it and to find slightly larger seeds seems to take more and more time on the recast. I've tried the tinned stuff (just for hooking) and it not much better...

flightliner: are you talking about baiting a swim or hooking - or both?

I've tried al sorts of cooking/soaking methods to open the seeds further without success and as peterjg says, finding lots of white kernels protruding a rarity.

I had thought of blaming the EU but it must be down to South American(?) suppliers.

ps As I've said before, I have had some success with giant hemp but fish don't always want bigger seeds, for some reason know only to themselves.............Not even sure if this is still available.

The price rise could be down to the fact that it is now used in far more products and considered a health food. It can can bought in health food shops for over £5 a kilo so still cheap when bought bulk.

Imo the reason is that as the price has risen dealers have been reticent to throw old stock away or reduce the price to sell more resulting in old hemp being sold at the same price as new stock.

I know that some don't bother if their hemp splits or not but I am one of those that does and old hemp does not split, is there any other bait that dealers would get away with selling old stock? I don't think so.

Just checked out Titmus now renamed Fishingbaitworld.

20KG about £40 delivered. Thats a 25% increase since my last order.

Dont chuck away any old hemp. Its good to grind it in the coffee grinder DRY and UNCOOKEDED.
Makes a great brown crumb additive cum binder.

Not the cheapest by any means, but always of solid quality, Haith's have been my supplier for ages.

I just checked and their prices are, well, astronomical:

Whole Hemp Seed

20 kilos for £46.40 . . . . but that included for free delivery . . . .

My last purchase of hemp last year was about the worst I have had, full of grit and dirt, I tell myself it could have been the last bag from my suppliers bigger bag at the rear of the shop but talking to him the other day he now says that this years supply is dire, so bad that when he preps it prior to boiling it now soaks for two days instead of the usual one and even then it's below par after a good boiling.
His sales have fallen noticably and to keep his customers he now mixes it 50/50 with the giant hemp variety.
I give him full marks for his good intentions but as said earlier days are that the fish just want one size which for me is important to give them what they want --- rather two seperate sizes than a mixed bag
There are two grades apparently, A and B with the A grade stuff going to food/ clothing etx and the B to feeds, maybe bio fuals (???) And, I suppose us anglers at the end of the supply line.
Peter, interesting post regarding hemp prices from Haithes in Grimmy/Cleethorpes, I,ve just googled this years hemp prices---- 35 cents a pound !.
Tee Cee--
both hooking and baiting, I dont need much per day session if I,m hemp n taring but when after tench it,s a little more thats needed---:eek:mg:

I don't know how true it is but I was told that hemp that doesn't open has been eradiated to stop it growing. If this is so could that be the cause of hemp refusing to open.
Either way that doesn't answer why the seeds are so small.

like most, I seem to spend a lot of time chucking tons of the stuff into rivers and lakes. Is it as good as it's cracked up to be? No idea how you could test that, but I do wonder sometimes.

I'd be inclined to say that, yes, it is very much as good as so many anglers say it is.

Hemp has stood the test of time over many. many years and in the right conditions will be very successful.

Not in anyway conclusive proof xenon by on its day it can be a seriously good bait---

I imagine the price of hemp has gone up due to the weak pound.
I make do with the ready to use tinned stuff now and can't fault it.

Peter; Do you find the Haith grains of a more consistent size, although I do realise you would only be more aware of this if you use it as hook bait rather than feed?

Personally, I would be happy to pay a little more for consistency of grain size.......

Hemp as a bed feed is not much better than other small seeds, groats, dari seeds etc,it is the numbers game that makes them so effective,I found barbel are as partial to groats as they are to hemp, quite a lot cheaper and easier to prepare, but for roach fishing hemp rules supreme, along with tares imo.
