I have dropped a few but and some fishing related! I like to soak my spool of line in water for 10 minutes or so before spooling a reel and did do this morning- a bulk spool of 4lb sensor and nearly full!

Well yours truly filled a deep bait tub inadvertently with hot water! When I went to retrieve it having put the reel on a rod, an end of the bulk spool had separated from the drum( presumably because of the heat) and miles of line had spoiled off!:wh

A retort by Delboy springs to mind:rolleyes:. It wasn't the sensors fault either!

Oops. That's some birds nest Mike. I'd guess the line was wound quite tight and it expanded a bit forcing the end off, assuming it was a one piece moulding.

Thinking about it a bit more it shouldn't really have happened since the spool will also expand and if water was in the centre of the spool it should expand first. Given that a lot of anglers do soak there lines it should be able to cope with it.

Ha, I did exactly the same only a couple of weeks ago. I now stick in a piece of dowel to ensure the ends don’t part, having said that I’m not sure soaking mono really helps.

I don't always do it as I forget and I shall not bother in future! I hope Tigger doesn't see it as it might upset him!:) I have more of the excellent sensor !

It has never happened to me before Gordon but I will put it down to experience! I'll bet that wouldn't happen to Progold but then as you cannot buy the stuff it wouldn't be possible to put it to the test!:)

Ouch Mike,

I don't soak my line before spooling, so this has never happened to me.

"One lives and learns" is the best way of dealing with it, if I knew you a bit better I’d probably take a water sample a little bit more though :)

Mike, why do you soak it in water?
That realy is a waste of time bud, just get someone to hold it on a pencil or similar and get them to put pressure on each side of the spool so it's under enough tension to reel the line on nice and snug.
I could never understand why people soak line in water......you being a solicitor n'all should know better than to take notice of these wierd practices people perform and try talking others into doing.:eek:mg: ;).

you just need to make sure its not twisting as you spool it. I've got my own method for this, if you wish to know ill post it up, if not ill zip it lol

I've never been convinced about the benefits of soaking line. I've done it but all that seemed to happen was that I got wet. I guess it might make a difference when spooling up with heavier lines ?

A foolproof way of spooling up without line twist I would be interested in.

I thought everyone knew how to spool line, there's been enough posts about it over the years? Just ensure the line is coming off the spool and onto the reel in the same direction of rotatation. Usually the correct side of the bulk spool has the label on it.

Absolutely. All done and dusted. Except I do the opposite: all my Shimano reels wind on clockwise (looking at the spool face on) so I make sure the line to be loaded comes off, over the side of its spool, anti-clockwise. And that never fails.

No wonder the topic keeps going. :)

Mike, daiwa make a line spool holder for when you reload your spool.
There's a few on ebay just now but the cheapest I could see was 12 quid and the seler was procastangling.
I've been threatening to get one for years !
Just ben forced to buy another rod so i'll have to keep holding the spools of line between me toes.....same as I told binka, it's costing me a fortune in socks as the friction burns holes in em :eek:mg:.

Nobody forces you to do anything Ian!;) What have you had to buy now?

:wh.......not sayin lol.

Do you remember when we where in NWA and we spoke to the chap who was in charge?...he said if you ever see a supero smuggler rod for sale grab it!
Well, I spotted one and had to haave it. I paid a lot for it but sod it, I don't buy anything else and I could be dead tomorrow!
It's the 11ft 6 version, so the more powerful one. I know the seller has another one he said is mint but hasn't go the placcy on the handle if your on the look out for one.

I had the same thing happen to me with a bulk spool of sensor..but not in hot water..the end just fell off.

Its braid you soak. Although you can put a bulk spool of mono in a bucket of water and wind the line on from the rotating drum so no twist.

don't tempt me Ian!!! What would I use it for?:)

No idea what you'd use it for but they do look nice and you can tell everyone you have one !

I've used the lighter one in the specialist for trotting and ledgering, I used it the other week and had a barbel with it and some chub etc.
I have wanted the 11ft 6in version for a while now but they really are hard to come across, you just don't see them.
I used the two piece 11ft 6 specialist for trotting the other day, had lots of small stuff but no barbel !
You could use it for still water tench or carp fishing, trotting etc etc, they're a very versatile rod.

Agree about soaking line mate.

My method is easy, I'll try to explain it - it always works for me. Only problem is I'm rubbish at explaining stuff, here goes.

The way to do that is get your Mrs to hold the spool if you can as Peter said I always start with sticker facing reel, then wind 5 turns on the reel. Now grab the line in each hand and place them together, if they are being loaded twisted (wrong) the line below your hands will bounce together and coil up, if this happens try loading it a different way - I. E turn the spool around and repeat untill your fingers meet the line below stays straight in a horseshoe shape, that indicates your loading it without twist.

I buy my line in bulk spools first time I load my line off a bulk spool I write a sticker out of how best to load each spool and stick it on the spool I.E load with sticking facing reel or with line coming off top of spool etc.

Hope this helps?

Soaking the line does work but only if the water is warm/hot.(most miss this bit)
All extruded polymers such as mono have a "memory" which can be altered by the application of heat.
This only has to be sufficient to transfer the heat to the core of the material.
After cooling the polymer memory will then have some of the new properties.
Cold polymers will become "set" though if their shape is not altered over time.
That's why we see coiling like we do and why it's worse on older spools that have been wound tight.
