I have admitted defeat in tying my own hooklengths with small hooks so stick with hooks to nylon! My favourites are Kamasan animal which are strong, appear well made and which remain sharp! The sizes are all tied to sensible bs mono ie a size 12 is available attached to 4 and 5lb line and a size 20 to 2lb one even 1.5! I am sure my float fishing has improved using them! I like to attach them to a cralusso quick change swivel thingy which aids a speedy change for different baits! It may be all in the mind but meat stays on the hook far better! They also unravel easily from the pack without tangles!

Tie my own eyed and stick with Guru. No special reason other than my skill level doesn't stretch to being able to discern the effectiveness of one pattern from another and it cuts down on the stock level and I can get them locally. They seem to stay sharp enough that I reuse most of them and as yet I haven't had one straighten out at all apart from pulling out of trees:eek:mg: In which case I just bend them back with the pliers. They do seem big relative to other brands though. Although I do like the way the point turns in slightly. It just seems like a good idea and the bend isn't too angular that I can't get a seed on.

I tend to stick tend to stick to three hook types as I've got confidence in them and to be honest I only really fish rivers and tend to float fish when I do. I tie my own hooklinks with reflo power pro and a drennan hook tier, I use a mini swivel between the hooklink and reel line to stop twist but just use the loop to loop knot using the eye of the swivel as a loop.

Kamasan Animal - barbel hook,
Kamasan B611 - chub and barbel,
and Drennan carbon match - roach and rudd hook.

I've got the odd packet of Preston PR 344 for when I fish the feeder.

Mike, the animals and drennan superspade are my go to hooks, they're both excellent hooks. If I couls only have one it would be the super spade. They all come in ready tied hooklengths if your require them.
Don't you ever fish straight through?
Oh.....barbed are best, they're only micro barbed anyhow ;).

As with lines you can keep on trying out new ones but having tried loads and loads over the years those are the best of them imo.
Only recently I veered off the path and got some guru feeder hooks....first decent fish I got on tha the hook straightened out and i lost the fish....whatever it was or how big it was i will never know because of that effin hook. If i'd stuck to my tried and tested i'm quite confident that I would have caught that fish.

I'm going to show my age now and say I used to have a favourite hook, they were called 'special caster' they were really fine wire and they used to bend a lot, i liked them got a lot of big chub out on them! Lol when I look back on them they were bloody rubbish but I liked them in the day :D

Nowadays I have a few hook patterns, b520, b532 and drennan super spade for rivers and Animals, b911 and pr36 for commercials.

I've found absolutely nothing that I'd use in preference to the Drennan Wide Gape Match. They are way stronger than the Drennan description might suggest, despite not being a hefty gauge. It suits me and the vast majority of my fishing. I just wish that they went down to a size 10 and that they did exactly the same pattern in barbless. I've had everything from tiddlers to double figure barbel, and near 20lb carp, on them. I can't recall a hook that I've had more faith in.

That's the main thing Sam, having faith in your kit. There may well be no difference but if you/I believe there is - then effectively there is!

I dont really have a favourite pattern but I like most of the Drennan wide gape hooks....especially the wg specialist. Kamasan animals are good too.

TBH I've no end of different packets of hooks and patterns in my various boxes. I'll use whatever I have that I think suits what I'm doing and the bait involved. I'm a bit fussy about hooks so I doubt I'd have bought them and they certainly wouldn't still be there if I had any doubts about them. I had a clear out a few months ago and dumped a load.

I seem to end up buying a packet [or two] every time I'm up the ts....probably why I've still got so many in the box !

must admit I look at the rows and rows of varying types of carp hook and think "What's that about?". For me Drennan super specialist micro barb does most of what I want.

My go to hook is the guru LWG or SLWG.
They seem to suit me for the type of fishing i am doing at the moment whether it's pole , waggler or feeder.
I will however probably step down in gauge when the colder weather starts.

There
I like Kamasan B911 and for lighter stuff the B611 which is still a strong hook and Animals for beefy stuff. I may be wrong but I think Kamasan is Drennan anyway?

Mike, have you seen the Guru Kaizen range of ready rigs which I believe are fairly new to the market? Come in some useful breaking strains along with that sharpness of the QM1

I've had been using the Kamasan hooks, but switched to Preston PR39 in a micro barb, I like the wider gape and the black finish.
