River fishing

I'm going down south Tuesday and want to do some river fishing and as per usual. I'm over thinking it with where to go and how to fish. My venues are royalty or the Thames/cherwell. And do I trot or feeder or take both and see what the conditions are like. I don't need tips on the Thames or cherwell but the royalty yes please as it's owes me a fish not fussed what it is. My float rod is rated to 6lb will I need to look at a beefier rod so any recommendations around the £100 mark please
