I was very interested to see Tight Lines on Sky on friday, where the primary guest was Mark Lloyd, who is the new Chief Exec for the new Angling Trust.

I was really impressed with Mark, when he was interviewed as head of the excellent ACA, and I was no less impressed with his grasp of his new role. My primary beef regarding the Angling Trust, was the lack of information and my scepticism on who would run the organisation.

I have to say that I havenow decided to join the Angling Trust, based primarily onthe interview by Keith Arthur, and they tried in the time available to address most of the pertinent issues. I think Mark has done a commendable job with the ACA, and I see no reason why he should not continue with the Angling Trust.

Hi Gary

Didn't see the programme but I am not surprised by your observations. I think Mark Lloyd will do angreat job for the Angling Trust, although I know he has had and to some extentstill does havea steep learning curve.....Joining three different disciplines of the sport and all the various threats and issues facing us will inevitably mean he has a great deal to get togrips with.

What is needed more than anything now is the support fromanglers it is down to all of us to supportAT and getthe organisation we deserve or hang on to our 20 quids and end up with nothing........ we need proffessional people working for usand the more cash which goes into the coffers the more good people can be employed.

The biggest problem wehave always had was fragmentation and too few people prepared to give anything back to help keep their sport/pastime alive....... always happy to leave it to someone else usuallysome poor `volunteer'then moan and whinge when things don't suit them.

I agree with your views Gary, Mark is excellent at putting a point across, very articulate and concise.............he will need to be too, after reading through the link I have supplied this latestEA newsletter concerns me greatly, particularly the bit about "New By-Laws"

Who is going to keep the EA in check? will angling Trust have the muscle?

Probably one issue the AT could take up is the introduction of beavers in Devon.

I saw on Country File on Sunday that the water company is wanting their introduction on the grounds that the dams they will build will filter out the nasty unwanted stuff washed off the land before entering the reservoirs.

I also saw on the same programme what a mass membership organisation (RSPB) can do with 'clout' behind it, food for thought.

"Who is going to keep the EA in check? will angling Trust have the muscle?"

Just one more reason to have a mass membership organisation.

Pleasedto beof some use, Bob/forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gif

Just to add that 'Consultatives' will play a major role in the AT, just a shame my area of the EA continually ignores attempts to get any started up here.

Not big on Consulting in Northumbria, still 'docking their caps' to the Lords & Dukes

On the issues of beavers, I saw on the local news 2 beavers escaped in the Gunnislake area, on the Tamar, and there was much concern & consternation regarding the damage that they did. I think that they have been caught now!!

Most of the rivers in Devon rise on either Dartmoor or Exemoor, and their catchment areas do not include agricultural land until their lower reaches, and having seen the wholesale removal of bankside trees by EA's I can hardly believe this turn around in emphasis.

Holding back runoff would surely result in increased flooding, during high rainfall periods, (October to April usually)

The RSPB have over 1 million members, but do they have to pay for a binocular & camera licence, in addition to Club and Day tickets?

I was disheartened to see that the Salmon & Trout Assosciation had declined to join, apparently it would cause problems with their charitable status, but are they not anglers too?

One of the CSG members does a fair bit of chubbing inNorthern Europe and from the photographs he's taken beaversappear to be doing a fair bit of damage. As one Devon farmer/landowner said the area will be turned into bog-land.

I asked a question on another thread about the S&TA not becoming part of the AT, and did they realise the Law of Unintended Consequences was now at work? i.e. Thatbecause the S&TA are now not part of the AT their members clubs, if they were also members of the ACA, will now have to join the AT to receive the continued 'peace of mind' cover the ACA previously provided.

Hi Gary

It was sad that the S&TA have chosen to take the `Charity' road so theycan not be a part of the unified body.

However as the Angling Trust is in the business of representing all anglers as the governing body recognised by the powers that be (which the S&TA can no longer do).

It is all the more important that all anglers whatever their preference game, sea, coarse, specialist, match and all points in between should get involved with and support the AT.

No reason why folk can't be members of both AT and S&TA but the voice recognised as the GB will be the Angling Trust.

Thanks Baz

I amnot good on the protocol of forums I am afraid......but I feel so strongly that we all have to stand up and be counted together once and for all, acknowledge that there will be no second chance, surethere will be teething problems butwe all need to give it the best shot possible with all our support Mark Lloyd and the interim board will haveenough cash to put the right `tools' in place all the quicker.

If we let this fail through lack of a few quid spread between all individuals....as well as the clubs, tacklecompanies and associated enterprises the only losers will be the angling fraternity in the end.

Excellent post - quite agree. Whatever initial concerns and teething troubles this is the best way forward for an organisation with plenty of clout...and putting it bluntly the potential to be a very effective pressure group in a time where all parties will be slavering for votes. I have np problem paying my individual membership AND whatever premium is placed on club cards to cover the cost of their memberships.

Lynda - the work you and your family continue to put into our sport is amazing and deserves recognition.

Was most impressed by Mark Lloyd on Tight Lines and have duly signed up today to become a member of the Angling Trust.

I cannot believe all the whinging about £20 membership. Anglers really are tight ar$es and selfish with it.

If you care about the future of your sport, sign up now, because I have no doubt we have a fight or three to face in the future, and not just against those who would pollute our rivers.

I have been banging on about PETA and their mega rich celebrity supporters for a couple of years now and they have the funds to pollute minds against us. Never more has it been important to have one high profile Angling voice to present our case.

The AT need a spokesman whom everyone can identify with, someone non anglers canrecognise and trust.
