Can anyone give me any information on Shattersford Lakes please, ie location, season/day-ticket, price etc or website?

Plus any other venues good for catfish in the Midlands area or thereabouts.

Holiday coming up and I would like to try for a cat.

Clive the lakes themselves are situated on the A442 a few miles north of kidderminster.you cant miss the signs, theres a nature reserve there. ive never fished the lakes but know they are available on a day ticket or for extra cost a night ticket...i think the water is not to clear so the fish do respond to baits in the daytime... as for other venues in the midlands ive had some joy in telford at the Withy pool...this lake contains fish stocked back in the 1950's..these fish are direct descendents from the origanal cats brought over by the duke of Bedford(catfish historians correct me if im wrong)so you do get a real sense of taking a step back into catfish history when fishing for these wonderful species...if i can be of anymore help re telford catwaters please feel free to post a message or e.mail me at anguillia@hotmail com

Dek,
Thanks for the reply, I've looked at the map and the lakes are quite handy for me. The possibility of an overnight ticket is a real bonus. Hopefully, another post may have more detail on Shattersford.

Telford also is good for me and any further info you can send on Withy Pool will be most welcome. I plan to spend 3-4 days/nights fishing for the Cats in July, but I know little about them or where to find them. Anything you can post will be very helpful. Cheers, Clive.

Clive, Des Taylor's new book "Fish the Midlands" has detail on Shatterford, about 5 pages worth. Well worth a look. Check the reviews section here. ?6.95 plus post from Laneman publishing. This should give you all the info you need. Withy Pool is not mentioned but plenty of others are.

Clive, Take Jons advice and get there early on Friday mate as the weekends are impossible. I've held the Shatterford Cat record twice, same fish caught two years apart. It is a very difficult water and i would not recommend beginning catting on a water like this. We (Catfish Conservation Group) have our own water over at Alcester with at least 6 cats known to be over 20 and 2 now over 30. There are however plenty of doubles to keep you interested. My 14 year old son currently holds the record 25lb 9oz caught 2 years ago. When you do go anywhere don't forget the best bait apart from livebaits, big bunches of the biggest lobworms you can find! You can find details on the ccg website. Happy Huntin.

Jon, Seamus, much appreciated.
Hopefully I should be able to fish mid-week, feeling more confident now.
Thanks to you both.

i have read that uptide sea fishing rods are ideal for cats , with large sea type fixed spool reels , is this ok for the casual cat angler, as i have both , or should i specialise in a rod and reel for the job? e-mail cats@rupert-fish.co.uk

thanks rupert

Keith here's a couple of spots to head for if they ain't taken.

To be honest you may need to book in advance to get in them.

At gainsborough you can park next to lake try to get right over other side opposite the pagoda building cats come out a lot over there.
Its a trek but worth it.

Eric's as you come down the hill to the lake keep to the left of the lake by the little wall.
Cast to the tiny island.

Fished lots of other swims there but those see the most action.
Will be trying my luck there again soon.

Good luck
