cat fish 4 the novice

i have read that uptide sea fishing rods are ideal for cats , with large sea type fixed spool reels , is this ok for the casual cat angler, as i have both , or should i specialise in a rod and reel for the job?

any practicle advise would be helpfull
and where is a good place to try in or near the coventry area.
