the first thing to think about when session carping is to make sure you are well fed, warm and comfortable because if you are miserable when you are out you will not fish as well as you can.

Sensible advice Roto.

I'd suggest that to start with you just fish days, to get used to what you are doing.
You don't want to be lucky enough to catch a large carp and then be fumbling about in the dark and putting the fish at risk.

Standard running lead rigs, with 8 to 12 inch mono hooklengths with Drennan Super Specialists, in a size to match the bait, knotless knotted.

Bait would probably be A-8, as it has been introduced into every lake in the country and thus would be acceptable.

Carp Angler has given good advice but I would like to expand upon that. Forget baits and rigs for the time being, a basic no not with active 8 will catch on 99% of carp waters in my opinion. So take the worry of bait and rigs out of the equation. Good water craft and bait application catches carp. Find the fish is the best advice any carp angler can recive, you can have the best rigs and bait, but if you are 300yrds from the fish you wont catch. As well as finding fish it is also worth the effort of finding out what is in the swim in front of you. A half hour working out the contours of the swim can make all the difference between catching and not. Effort=results in carp fishing, if you try and get everything as spot on as you can all the time results will follow. And remember "sod it that will do" is the battle cry of a blanker.

Graham asked how to attach them. The rigs page doesn't say. How DO you attach and SEAL them?

Just started fishing again after 25 years.
Things are certainley a little bit different now. I have learned how to make simplified rigs from either reading fishing articles or visiting web sites like this one [of which i visit on a regular basis, but still finding my feet].
There is one thing that is totally confusing me at present," what bait and groundbait to use " there are so many on the market, its where to start.
If anyone could help, or point me in the right direction of where to begin, or any basic information on how to catch them big ones Please let me know.

Frank, tell us what type of water you're going to fish, and if there's any particular species you want to catch. We can help you better then.

Hi Graham, There are two stillwater Lodges where i intend to start my learning curve, 1 is approx size of a football pitch and of the same shape with reed beds and overhanging trees mainly in the corner areas [I know that the lodges are stocked with large carp/bream/tench and also some good sized perch, but a nice size tench would be nice]. I also live very close to a small river of which i visit quite regular it is fairly shallow in places and usually very slow running, i am told by other members of the club [which i recently joined] that there are good size chub and bream.

For any one who can help. I am a 12 year old school boy so I obviously don't have much money. I have just started carp fishing and have bought 3 2.25 TC rods now I need 3 baitrunners to go with the rods. I am stuck as I dont know weather I should save up and get the shimano 8000 GTE or to just go and get 3 cheaper ones.

Sam,
Take a look at the Diawa and Okuma ranges
they are both excellent reels at very reasonable prices...if you hunt around you can pick up the Okuma Coronado for about 40.00 pounds(now known as Longbow) I use the okuma's and have found them to be great reels for their price tag.The Diawa's have been around a while and are still going strong, I have a few freinds who use them and say they wouldn't change them.
Happy hunting!

The Daiwa Regal Z 4050 bite 'n' runs are going for about ?35 at the monent, an absolute steal for a pretty decent baitrunner.
