Hi, I suppose I could be considered an ex-course angler..... not been fishing for years, but I have this sudden urge to try a spot of sea fishing. The only sea fishing I've done is off rocks on foreign holidays..as you do. However, I don't do boats, so beach, rock, Pier or Jetty is preferable. What I'd like to know is... Where is best to go within easy reach of north Manchester (Bolton)? Do I need a licence / permit etc., plus..the missus want's to know...can we keep / eat anything we catch (if anything)? Any advice would be helpful.

Have a look at the wirral sea fishing website Adrian, they used to keep a good forum of up to date catch reports around the north west.

you can keep and eat what you catch, IF its above the minmimum landing size, every area is differant on the sizes. visit a local tackle shop, they will have tide tables/books that list all the sizes and fish have to be and any other local bylaws that will affect you.

If you can deal with larger boat travel (i.e. ferries), the Isle of Man is accessible for a short breakfrom NW England, and there's some good information on the web about fishing there http://www.manxshorefishing.com/

Helps if you know someone there I suppose.

Could also ask at your local tackle shop, which for you would be BAS, unless I'm much mistaken. They are more coarse and specialist than sea, but the guys there are greatto talk to.

Thanks folks & thanks Coelacanth.... Not keen enough at the moment to want to do any ferry travel. I'd really like somewhere I can just drive to andfish. The Wirral Sea Fishing website mentioned above looks like a good place to start...but happy to hear more input.

Within a reasonably short drive of Bolton is Arnside, which is picturesque enough a backdrop to make for a good day regardless of catching, there's no need for long casting, a fresh Flounder tastes as good as any flattie out there, and if all else fails the chippy thereis as good as any around...

That sounds more like my idea of sea fishing... how do I find out more? Can you just go & chuck in or what? ;-)

Basically, yes.Next time I'm in the shop I'll show you on Google Maps where the most popular spotsseem to be/forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gif. If you change your membership settings to allow private messages, I'll PM you some information to be going on with, although for now if you let Mark or Chris know where you're planning to go I'm sure they'll be able to kit you out with the right gear /forum/smilies/secret_smiley.gif.
