Pattenoster or Free running

When fishing flowing water and not being able to cast up stream or down stream which gives the better bite detection a Pattenoster or running ledger ?

A free running rig with just enough weight to hold bottom

Yesterday I fished a two hook rig ( something us crude sea anglers can do ) one hook on a semi fixed flowing trace the other hook fished pattenoster stlye about 4ft from the lead both hooklinks about 12 inches with just enought lead to hold bottom .Result four mullet two on the pattenoster two on flowing trace,would I have caught four if I had only using one hook ?
