Why does my rod in the background of my photo's look bent or curved ? Is there any way of stopping this effect ?

It's a Nikon Coolpix L4 a cheap digital camera, only comes with a standard lens. Bought it because the bloke in the camera shop said it was tough and water resisant.

From a review - "The f2.8-f4.9 Nikkor lens is better than average, producing sharp images from edge to edge, although it does suffer from significant barrel distortion at the wide angle."

There's your answer!

Mind you, lots of people are walking around with bent rods and don't even know it!

Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
The wider the angle of the lens the more bendiness creeps in (barrel distortion), like those convex mirrors you get on sharp bends in the road or at the end of peoples' drives.
