SV - go to your User CP/Edit Options, scroll down to Thread Display Options and select the box for Avatars (also for Signatures and Images if required). There's other options to define how you want threads displayed as well.
Dont forget to save any changes!

Clicky Scroll down to Thread Display Options, Check the box for Show Avatars etc and save the changes.
