I've just finished reading "Caught by the river", a collection of some 37 short pieces with a common theme of rivers. Newly-published, and written by a spectrum of contributors that ranges from Jarvis Cocker to Chris Yates by way of Roger Deakin, Gavin Praetor-Pinney and many others, it is informative, educative, entertaining and above all evocative, reminding me of all the reasons I go fishing.

One piece (Endless Summer by Robin Turner) about the Ogmore river in South Wales boiled up long-forgotten memories of a summer's day in my childhood, hopping over stepping stones and playing in huge sand-dunes. Roy Wilkinson's contribution, on the Wandle's restoration, is inspiration defined.

Throughout runs the common thread of the deep relationships the authors have with their particular river, its effect on their lives and the value in which they hold it.

There's even an idiosyncratic website, http://caughtbytheriver.net/, to complement the book.

I'm hooked!
