I'm moving house up to Shrewsbury in 3 Weeks and will be joing the Town Club that controls the Severn. As I've never before fished for barbel would anyone be willing to show me how?!

I've got the gear but no idea.

Hello John,

As i know next to nothing about Barbel Fishing, and i don't live near to Shrewsbury, i can't help you, but if i did and could i would.
I am sure that there will be someone on here that will help you as soon as they drag themselves away from the Angling Trust Thread lol :D

Monkmoor around the island above or below it with halibut pellet on the hook and feeder full of small pellets. And keep the pellets going in until the fish come on the feed. Evening time the best time of day.
Bites will be 3 ft twitches, so no problems there seeing them.
Fish halfway across the river.

Frankwell Carpark town centre up around the flats is also a good area, just as the water turns deeper after the shallow run, same tactics as above.

Sorted!

TBO has it spot on John. I don't know Shrewsbury town lengths that well, altho don't live too far away, but it doesn't matter as that whole area of the Severn has loads of shoalie barbel in the 5-7lb stamp, and the method is pretty constant throughout, keep the bait going in mid river as Phil says and eventually you will bring them in.

Don't leave your rod/s unattended though mate, even while having a pee, they will have your gear in the river in seconds.

John if it's showing you need, sorry can't help, as I rarely fish that way these days. Can I suggest you look in the archives on this site if you want rigs, etc. But really you don't need complicated rigs, keep it simple, running big feeder rig with a 4s Drennan Specialist hook and a hair rig.
I've already told you which areas are good and the sort of distance you need to fish at, you really don't need much more than that to start catching as barbel are pretty thick creatures on the Severn.

An afternoon walking the banks in good weather on either length and talking to the anglers fishing will give you more info if you need it.
Be honest with the guys fishing and tell them you don't know what your doing but you do want to learn. You'll be surprised at the response you'll get in most cases.

Thanks for the offer John - is that a day ticket stretch or is it part of the town club?

i may well be in contact when I've settled in early September!

Its a club water but day tickets available form local tackle shops. The stretch is just up stream from Atcham. On the Ironbridge road.
