How do you rate yourself as an angler?

There's lots of threads at the mo' about skill and who's the best, but what about you?

Are you a puddle basher, mugging hungry pond fish?
Are you a barbel/carp angler willing to spend eons on the bank hoping to catch 'The Name'?
Are you a barbel angler, catching endless numbers of easy 'schoolies'.
Are you a 'fish chaser' seeking glory?

Or are you an angler?

Ron thinks we need a juicy thread.....

Here you go Ron....

I think a lot of angling expertise follows on from angling opportunity. I am sure I would be a far better angler If there had been more opportunities when I was a kid, There weren't many on merseyside in the 1960s, not on my side anyway. It seems to me that most of you who obviously are the most accomplished anglers on FM, seem to have grown up on the waters you still fish. You don't know how lucky you are!

Good point Klik, I've often thought the same.
Don't be fooled by what you see in the press about the Bristol Avon, I've considered re-locating many times! But can I justify it, just to gain better fishing or angling cred'? Nah....

Steve, I used to live in Bristol - for 15 years or so. It was during the long break I had from fishing. I was self employed at the time. Some of the guys who worked for me were anglers. They kept trying to get me to go with them, but I just couldnt drag myself away.

I really wish I could talk to you about the bristol Avon... but I can't.

I regret it more than I can say, but you dont get any rebates on your time.

I do or try to do a bit of most types of angling. My favourite at the moment is a toss up between floatfishing for tincas and/or trotting a river using a centrepin and match style rod for whatevers willing to take my bait.

I'm just a reasonably competent angler and dont specialise in anything...I just love fishing.
There are one or two things I'd like to think I'm pretty good at and these are the things I enjoy most...which is probably why I'm good at it.

Roach, barbel, sea trout & trout do it for me but if I had to fish for only one species for the rest of me angling life it would be roach....trotting with a pin or bread on the lead.Never tire of doing either.

I go fishing to catch fish, I don't worry about being a good angler, great or bad angler. I am not sure how I can rate myself as an Angler, but Spiders would sum it up in one word, W**ker.

I am sure many of use would be better Anglers if our Rivers were not so clean and the fish stocks were the same as the 60's 70's and 80's.
I have said many times our rivers are to clean and this has had an impact on fish stocks.

Some may say with less fish in the rivers, your a better angler today than those from years gone by.

What makes a great Angler??, someone fishing for a 50lb Carp and catching it after 6 months, or an Angler catching the same Roach or Barbel time and time again?

By and large, I just want my float to go under......... lots.

I'd say where I fish, most are concerned with fish size above quantity. I'm a quantity and fish size is a bonus type, myself.

Sooner have 15 - 20 average size fish than one bite and a decent one, but then I don't find getting one bite a trip an achievement!

Most of my session are short so it's normally targeted at catching a few and to hell with PB's as I haven't got time to sit round for that special fish.

So that probably makes me ****!!

Steve I'm just very good at it most of the time. I usually hit the target I set myself each time I go out. Tomorrow and Sunday the target will be catching a barbel or two. Conditions are right, so I expect to catch. Sunday could be less certain as the river will be falling back to NSL or fell, but will be in with a shout I think.

I wouldn't be so bold as to even call myself an angler. I fish and enjoy myself. If I catch what I'm after I'll be over the moon, if I catch something else I'll have a dance. I go out to catch fish and that's where it ends. I think I know how to do it reasonably well but then the old fella gives me a day where everything goes t*ts up and I doubt myself. This is the place I trawl to get my confidence back and confirm that I'm a fisherman!
