this might be a really stupid question but i am getting on a bit my son has lost the card from his camera is it possible to put photos onto a new card from a computer as all his photos are saved on a computer

Generally speaking mate the idea is to store the pics on the card for the short term, then transfer the pics to the pc or disc for long term storage.
If you keep the pics on the memory card the card will soon become full and new pics will not be stored!
