First call for paper and poster abstracts

11th River Restoration Conference 2010
University of York
14th/15th April 2010 (optional site visit on the 16th)

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS 30th September 2009

This year the challenge is to have a range of papers that demonstrate the skills needed to deliver restoration projects for social, economic and habitat benefit. Topics might include the following where river restoration or habitat enhancement is an integral part of the project.

· Putting river restoration into planning policy – recently there has been a lot of discussion about the social, economic and landscape benefit of river restoration, yet projects that demonstrate these benefits remain limited

· Planning restoration for the Water Framework Directive (WFD) – River Basin Management Plans will be finalized by December 2009. It has been suggested that successful achievement of WFD will necessitate the integration of existing initiatives such as catchment sensitive farming (CSF), higher level stewardship (HLS), the control of invasive species, and the removal of weirs to encourage fish passage etc. Does this go far enough and how can river restoration help deliver targets?

· Wider global perspectives – our conference audiences always look to learn from outside the UK, especially in terms of river restoration initiatives and how the WFD programmes of measures (PoMs) will be delivered in Europe

· Project appraisal for adaptive management and reducing uncertainty – learning from our past experiences is essential to help guide us in the quest for most appropriate use of river restoration techniques. Examples from the physical or the social sciences will be welcome

This is the first call for paper and poster abstracts. We wish to continue to attract participants from the UK and abroad, thereby furthering our commitment to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences.

If you are interested in presenting a paper or poster please send your ABSTRACT to the river restoration centre (RRC@therrc.co.uk) by the 30th September 2009 using the format outlined below.

The aspiration of this conference is to provide a forum where ideas can be discussed across disciplines and between those charged with implementing policy, designing schemes, carrying out on-the-ground work or assessing the results for ecological, physical, economic and social gain. A programme will be prepared and circulated towards the end of the year along with details of the conference costs. We will aim to keep costs as close to those in 2009 as possible (i.e. circa £285 for an RRC member as a residential participant).

Please note: We are a not-for-profit organisation so are unable to cover any costs for speakers e.g. conference fee, travel, accommodation etc. (substantially discounted places are available to students and small NGO's e.g. river trusts, community groups etc).

For more information about the Centre, this conference and details of previous events refer to our website: www.therrc.co.uk, email at: rrc@therrc.co.uk or call 01234 752979 or contact Jenny Mant or Abi Pryce
