Below is the e-mail I received today from 'Our Rivers' campaign.

Although it refers to the Wear and my MP, it can equally apply to any/all rivers in England & Wales.

Hi John,

Great to speak with you earlier about the Wear.

Here is the link from which to download the 'draft letter to an mp': http://www.ourrivers.org.uk/static/uploads/companions/Letter_to_MP.doc

By writing a letter to your MP (preferably personalising it and making it nuanced to your river) and asking her to write to Hilary Benn, Secretary of State, for the reasons set out in the letter, your river stands a better chance of having the key pressures addressed.

The WFD requires that all water bodies must reach good ecological status by 2015, and therefore gives a driver for action. The WFD also requires a timescale for action for your river is stated, and demands that pressures on your river are addressed. Targeted measures are critical for future action to a) be undertaken and b) be done in a timely manner.

Getting these details into the final plan will mean that the issues your river faces will much more likely get resolved sooner, and will provide the 'stick' with which to continue to drive action on the River Wear.

In order to represent the growing political support for the campaign, we are looking to get MPs pins on the map (see the front page of the Our rivers website - www.ourrivers.org.uk). Therefore it would be great if, when contacting your local MP you could ask her to put her pin on the map.

You may also want to consider a press release with Roberta Blackman-Woods, especially given her previous success in resolving rubbish on the Wear. You can download draft press releases here:

http://www.ourrivers.org.uk/standup/

This is an example of what a local media release could look like (article in Hunts Post):

(Although Our Rivers wouldn't advocate dredging such as in the above case - problems are more likely linked to water quality issues)

Please copy me in on any correspondence with MPs. It might also be worth writing to your parish council chair too.

I look forward to hearing from you and best of luck getting a response from Roberta, and getting her to adopt the Wear too!

Best regards,

Charlie Butt
