I have recently taken to fly fishing for dace on one of my local rivers when I haven't got the time to get out of London to a decent trout water. I am having trouble with a particular shoal of dace in very fast water. I am having great difficulty getting a fly down deep enough promt a take. I can see the fish clearly and the only takes I get are when the fly is around 8 inches from the river bed. The water is so fast though that the fly is often out of the swim before it reaches this depth. I have tried heavier flies such as gold head pheasant tails but the flies heavy enough seem to large for the dace and they only seem to nip at the fly instead of taking it properly. The ideal fly would be around a size 12-14 and very dense. any suggestions.
