I am fishing the Wye more than ever now but it is a big river which needs a couple of feet on to fish its best, this means heavy feeders of 4 or 5oz to hold bottom. Therein lies the problem for me at least because I don't have a rod that can throw that sort of weight comfortably.

I do have a 1.75lb tc Greys rod that I took down the local lake this morning and that managed 4oz ok but I wouldn't like to go any higher, not safely anyway. So........c'mon you Trent boys, what will do the job do you reckon and I am not prepared to pay mega bucks at my age in fact the more under £100 the better as far as I am concerned. I am nearly 73 the proud owner of about 14 rods but only one medium feeder rod to my name and to be quite frank I ain't gonna get a lot of years use out of it now am I.

I had a look at the Daiwa twilight 1.75/2.25lb twin top barbel rod which I can get for £80 and I have asked someone on here whether its up to the job, it needs to throw 5oz comfortably.

Graham,

On Saturday come and take a look at the Grey's Method Feeder rod which copes with heavy feeders pretty well. It comes with 4oz, 5oz and 6oz tips and the 5oz and 6oz have larger rings to allow a heavy leader to be used easily.

Very nice Peter but too many pennies, I have since come across the MAP matchtek heavy feeder that throws 6oz, at the right price too the only problem is they ain't got any in stock, ain't that the truth eh!

How many times am I going to fish the river when I need to go that heavy, so its a sort of specialist tool for when its needed and not worth paying a fortune for at my age mate.

On the Trent Graham, for Barbel, my rods are 'Fox frontiers' in 2 3/4lbs tc.
The are, I guess esentually carp rods - but I find them great all round tools. Powerfull enough to lob feeders up to 8ozs, but 'progrssive' enough to land fish (in the right swim) on hooklinks down to 6lbs....
I've used them for all sorts of situations, and have landed pike to nearly 20lbs, catfish over 50lbs and numbers of trent barbel on hooks down to a size 14.
Not sure if they are still avalible (mine are, I guess 6yrs old now), but you my find some on e-bay. New they were I think £120 each.

Shoud you 'need' a quivertip I'd suggest a 'diawa porky pig' or similar, great rod for big feeders where a sensitive tip is needed. Very powerful though, with not alot of 'feel'...

I already have a 3lb carp rod Mark that I use for spodding that would chuck the weight easy but I don't think carp rods are forgiving enough for river fishing.

I know about the porky pig and they do them in 13ft as well but not anymore though they do occasionally pop up on ebay.

Looking at all the various heavy and extra heavy feeder rods its amazing how many will only chuck up to 4oz and no more, I guess us river boys are bottom of the rod making list these days.

'Carp style' rods, like all rods vary grately. Dont take too much notice of the 'TC' as the 'action' is far more important. Mine are much more 'forgiving' than my Diawa heavy feeder rod - which incidently will cast further with weights up to 4ozs.

I bought two Korum 3G barbel rods for the trent barbel. They play the fish beautifully; lots of strength in the middle, soft enough for plunging fish... they cast 3oz very well, but I have found they are not man enough to cast 5 oz easily. If you have enough space, you can heave the feeder out but it's an obvious strain on the rod, and it wont put it out very far, though it may be me not putting enough oomph into it, perhaps being too wary of breaking the rod. I used to use 2.75 carp rods which needless to say would throw the 5oz feeder right across the river!

How far you aiming to cast Graham. If you're simply lobbing ourt a bit feeder a rod length or two, you don't need to be as geared up as if you are launching to the far bank.

Have a look at the Wychwood barbel rods Graham. I'm sure they do a flood water rod and their cheaper range retails at around £50. You'll need a 2.5 tc rod to handle 5oz feeders. My 2.2lb Korum starts to struggle at around 4oz. You can have a play with the Korum on Saturday if you like - it will certainly lob 5oz half way accross the Trent.

consider the korum neoteric quiver, comes with a 2,4,6 oz quiver muli tip and an avon tip. I've used it on the wye chucking a 5oz feeder. nice action for playing fish but casts ok at that weight

Graham,
I bought myself a Shimano Catana 13ft Heavy Feeder a couple of seasons ago for exactly this type of job. It's good for 4 to 5 ounces. They also do a 13ft Extra Heavy and a 14ft Extra Heavy. Check it out. They are a superb peice of kit for the money. Large, three-leg rings, excellent reel seat and build quality. Fisherman's Friend were knocking them out for £60 for the 13ft Heavy to £73 for the 14ft Extra Heavy. Well worth a look.

The search is over, I have taken Ray up on his kind offer and chucked four ounce in excess of 50 yards with it no problem so it will definitely chuck five ounces but maybe not quite so far which is all I need.

Thank you all for your kind suggestions but most of all thank you Ray I think I have a bargain.
