They only have 600+ members and they dont mention fishing anywhere nor shooting. These people will only win the argument with a mainstream shift of opinion fuelled by silly sods like you, taking on enemies that don't exist yet.
And people like the anglers trust making scaremonger headlines about Otters. You lump all the environmentalist together and pick a fight with them. You will fuel the numbers of the Anti's and play straight into there hands.
Just go fishing! No ones taking it away from you!

I can see where you are coming from and I used to say something very similar. The problem is that it amounts to burying your head in the sand... and when you arent looking... if you are unlucky, or of you mistime your response, it could be too late to do anything.

Barry Rickards came up with a coherent argument against that view, but I cannot find it now. It used to be on the old site somewhere... perhaps someone can help with that. I would still agree that there is no point in seeking out the enemy and spoiling for a fight: that's pointless and potentially damaging.

As far as Dave's post is concerned in my view I would much rather know about groups like that than not know - so well done Dave!

The Pom is having a laugh to suggest that anti anglers are an enemy that doesn't exist yet. One only has to search the net for animal rights groups to know this is a reality. A bit more digging and you'll find their aims and objectives, and to a group they want angling banned.
If that's an enemy that doesn't exist yet, then I dread to think what one that does would look and act like!!!!!!!!

For reasons I won't go into on a public forum, I can assure all reading this, they have the structures to be well organised when they want to be and do use them on a regular basis.

I can also assure the readers, they are monitored, that info is collated and those that need to be readied for an onslaught are kept informed.

And the question I asked above was not a flippant one either, it's directly link to the above!!!!

yes there are lots of scary things on the web and host of different nutty people living out fantastic fantasies, including a small lunatic fringe who would like to take the fight to fishermen. We will never stop that...we can however insure they remain a small lunatic fringe.

Years and years of stirling work by angling bodies concentrating on environmental issues and habitat restoration has slowly changed our image from louts who kill ducks with discarded line and split shot. To the guardians of the water ways.
The more we work with environmental groups and show none fishermen what we are about, the more you cut off the possible recruits to the Antis. Because quite simply without that mainstream support they wont get anywhere need forcing any type of legislation against us.

These people(Animals count) that care for animals, want to see better protection for farmed and domestic animals, and make sure the law on hare coursing is enforced.
Whats wrong with caring? 'Paramilitry' , 'dangerous loonies?'For reasons I won't go into on a public forum, I can assure all reading this, they have the structures to be well organised when they want to be and do use them on a regular basis.'

You are in fantasy land pal.Your waging war on an Enemy that barely exists, and thank goodness your rantings dont get out in the general public, or you would be driving people into the anti camp, as efficiently as the AT has with its anti Otters-rant.
Admit it your just itching for a good fight with some crusties, and cant exist without feeling there's a whole conspiracy of net works out there determined to put an end to your hobby.
You want to keep the Antis in the lunatic fringe? Go and take your angling club to do some good environmental work and make sure the public knows your doing it.

Your type are determined to take Angling to Hell in a Hand cart, so you can stand smuggly at the gates saying.'I told you so'.

The problem with your argument whingeing pom is that you, like many others, seem to think that angling will never be killed off (or at least severely injured) because there is no one group that is powerful enough to do it. What you don't take into account is the collective power of all these small, and some not so small, groups and the effect they are already having, and could have if someone came along and gathered them altogether in one very powerful organisation.

Just like anglers would like to do now with the organisation known as the Angling Trust so that we can fight against anything like that happening.

Angling will not be banned in one blow, but all these anti angling organisations that continually chip away at it are slowly maiming it, and they will continue to do so while we have no national organisation that is strong enough to fight back.

Granted, the Trust have not got everything right since its inception, but which organisation has ever made a perfect start?

But as long as we have anglers like you who go out of your way to fight against it, and the membership remains low, and consequently its finances and the strength that goes with that, it never will get its act together.

You are not doing anglers any favours with your attitude towards the Trust. Either pay up or shut up.

why do you have to call me "a silly sod " is it because i dont agree with you ? if you think angling is not under threat you are wrong,i have had personal experience of the anti anglers out there and it was not a nice experience perhaps if it happened to you it might change your mind i dont know, you have a right to your opinion but it is just that an opinion it doesnt mean that it is correct can i only have an opinion if its the same as yours? when you use derogatory remarks towards people it is not the way to have a reasoned disscusion or to persuade people to your side of a disscusion.

"Put up or shut up", would be a better ploy Graham. But this is typical of "people" such as WP. They make an enormous amount of wind, yet they do not really have the courage of their convictions and remain disgustingly anonymous.

And consider what is happening in certain parts of Europe, noticably Germany and Switzerland where the returning of fish alive to the water by anglers is banned.

And match fishing is banned there too; not that I'm a keen matchman, but I will fight for the rights of match anglers who's sport might be interferred with in the future.

Its my pastime and my livelihood as much as yours! Who the hell do you think you are to tell people to shut up because they don't conveniently share your blinkered view point.

Were I a Quizzling, a fifth columnist, a mole planted by the anti-angling/blood sports brigade, that's exactly what I would be telling anglers. Do nothing, sit back, relax, whilst we undermine your sport and bar you from practising it.

Just a thought...

As for being seen as guardians of our waterways, I wish that were true. It is as far as we are concerned, but joe public doesn't have a clue and no amount of publicity will convince them. We can do good and should do good and when it's done shout from the rooftops about it, but much will fall on deaf ears.

You're entitled to an opinion WP, but i fear it's more than a little misconceived.

Who the hell do you think you are to tell people to shut up because they don't conveniently share your blinkered view point.

He doesn't really need anybody to defend or justify what he's done for the sport but....somebody who has been lauded in the Angling Press as one of the 50 most influential anglers in the history of our sport, who has developed and promoted angling in so many ways, who has encouraged others to participate and enjoy our sport, ...

I'd go on but I suspect that at present you are set in the views you have expressed. I think you are woefully misguided. Interestingly a significant number of regular contributers to this site, who were very sceptical about the Angling Trust and had not joined, did so immediately after the recent Trent pollution.

So WP..I'll acknowledge your views regarding the lack of threat from the antis...I think you're wrong but we can agree to differ. However I'll invite you to join the Angling Trust for its vital role in the monitoring of our waters, their key campaigning work, and their highly effective legal actions against polluters.

"Blinkered Viewpoint!!!!"

It's you WP who has the blinkered viewpoint.

As Posh says, Graham Marsden has done untold good for angling as a whole in this country, as well as being Editor of Fishing Magic, the most successful angling website in the UK and one of the most successful in the world.

I count Graham as one of my closest friends. I know what good he has done for the sport.

As for yourself, you are nothing but a cringing coward and an embittered old fool; I feel sorry for you.

Ha! Ha! Ha! What a N**head! You know nothing of me and what I've done ecologically and environmental over the last 30 + years. However, others who post and read this site do, and they'll be rolling about the floor laughing their as**s off at your comments!!!! And It's far more than you could ever imagine! And the principle reason why I'm in a position to make the comments I did.

WP....I'm afraid you really have shot yourself in the foot here...and most of the other extremities as well. You're entitled to your views but making wild statements has, I'm afraid, to the many of us who know of the bad one's efforts, devalued your argument to the point of ridicule.

You could legitimately point out that The bad one is a nom de plume so you are unable to establish the nature of bo's expertise. Fair point.. but like a number of posters on here s/he has to maintain anonymity for professional/personal reasons.

What is wise is; that before making strong statements of another posters expertise you should check their previous posting. This would be sufficient for you to realise that the poster has, for example, years of ecological and environmental expertise at the highest level and you could have adjusted your remarks to make the same points without aiming your bullets directly at yourself (that's metaphorical of course!). So check before you write.

I did! And did a second time so I acknowledge my mistake that I missed your reference to already being a member of the Angling Trust - however I do not alter my views on your points.

Me and old Phil might have a few differences but I respect his views tremendously as I know the stirling work he has done, not only to help make Angling Trust a reality but in the field of specialist angling.

Yes Phil, the idiotic wailings of this unknown ****head often make me laugh, and also make me think that it's someone who is purely taking the ****.

But sometimes this **** taking goes beyond a joke.

Thanks for that support guys! It's deeply ironic that the Richard Head makes the idiotic comments he has at this time, as I'm working on an Environmental/Ecological Management Strategy for a very large Angling Club between visiting this site for a bit of light relief lol!

Ron and you just know it's only casting for a bite with no malice at all!

Boy I do miss Baz on this site he gave me hours of entertainment dangling!

My comments where to the people who had already posted and others whom share there view points And was not addressed specifically to one person, or about one person. You seem to have a problem grasping details.
My only singular address was to the man, Graham Marsden who believes that people who don't share his views should be shut up . I am sure he's a wonderful fisherman, and knows his maggots and his worms. But that doesn't give him the right to censure my viewpoints. Or any one else on your forum who does not share his views... as is his habit.
The majority of Fishermen in this country are NOT members of the AT.
It does not speak for all anglers.(despite its claims) Not all anglers believe it is the answer. In fact many of us believe that it is fast becoming our biggest problem.

The point in my posting this is basically simple. There's no option but to get organised, and I'd never come across this lot before And whilst these folks don't say anything on the site about angling, I suggested that angling was a beastly activity (I never mentioned fish and pain) and the response was

'Thank you for your email. Animals Count agrees with you that fish can feel pain and that therefore angling is cruel and unnecessary. Please see page 10 of our EU manifesto for more details: http://www.animalscount.org/files/manifesto_2009.pdf'
