Corps to kill every fish in five-mile stretch of shipping canal

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will kill every fish in a five-mile stretch of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal early next month to keep Asian Carp from breaking into Lake Michigan during maintenance on the electronic barriers.

The corps will shoot Rotenone, a powerful pesticide like chemical, into the canal between the Lockport Locks and the electronic barrier near 135th Street in Romeoville. Workers will dump dead fish into a local landfill and restock the canal later, according to a press release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources issued Friday.................continues

Sounds a bit brutal, but if they dont want carp in lake Michigan they probably have a good reason. destructive and invasive species seems a fair description to me. Or is it they dont want bivvies all round the lakes.:)

Ironically this lake was so badly polluted up until the 80's no fish could live there anyway. with the arrival of another alien species namely zebra mussel the waters cleared and life resumed with game fish being stocked and thriving.,anyone see Paul Young's programme on sky where he went out in a boat with a local angling guide who explained the above to him?
