Have they been put there to improve the river as a fishery, or have they been put there as fodder for otters and cormorants?

And what about roach?

When I fished the Wensum in the 60s it was one of the finest roach rivers in the country.

You make a fair point, Ron. Stocking is sticking plaster if the barbel do not have the habitat they need to survive.

The Wensum suffers as much as any river from atrocious management by the EA, which has successfully pegged abstraction at levels which the river system cannot sustain. A Pyrrhic victory. The EA needs to begin reducing abstraction here, and elsewhere throughout the country.

We manage our water resource very badly in the UK. Everyone's roof receives 100 litres of water PER SQUARE METRE each year. So most houses collect 3,500 litres or more of water a year. And what do we do with it? Yes, throw it away. And to flush our loos we use.... drinking water.

This nonsense has got to stop. The government should be insisting that all new houses have rainwater harvesting and 'grey water' (washing water, basically) recycling. It's dirt cheap technology which could reduce river abstraction massively.
