Have you ever done it in the sea ?

Just took the family for a long weekend in Devon, accidently loaded a couple of float rods, a couple of reels and a box of bits just in case. Did the family thing for a couple of days, then on the final day went to Brixham. Dropped the missus at the shops and went to the harbour for scout round. I noticed some shadows down by the rocks and ran to my car for the gear. Set up was a 13 foot float rod, reel loaded with 5lb maxima, a 9BB crowquill topper to a size 6 drennan super specialist. Bait was a few tins of luncheon meat! As i'm passing by the locals they were in hysterics at my inadequate tackle. bloody missus spreading rumours again! Anyway first chuck the float shot away missed it. 30 bites later and i'm 30 nil down time for drastic measures. I quickly tied a hair on the hook and reduced the bait size to half inch chunks. This brought immediate success with Ballan Wrasse after Cuckoo Wrasse coming to the net in their dozens. The largest were about a pound and a half but the fight on this tackle was phenomenal they've got so much power for their size. Next thing i know the locals have all sideled down to me and dropping their 6oz leads all round my swim. I decided to move over to the breakwater and instantly started knocking out Wrasse again. Then a fish i was uncertain of turned out to be a pouting as was pointed out to me by a local. Thankfully he plonked himself down and began identifying all these strange creatures to me. I'm sure he thought i was winding him up when i said i didn't know my pouting from my pollacks. I ended up with Wrasse, pollack, pouting, scad, mackerel, garfish (although these were caught on slithers of mackerel) and finished off with an incredible scrap from a 2lb bass. If you're ever down there give it a go it's such easy fishing and they won't arf make your arms ache! Certainly made up for the lost weekends barbel fishing (well almost)

I have done similar from Scarborough to Porthcawl, great fun but don't forget to clean you rods and reels properly afterwards. I still have my lovely old Intrepid Black Prince which rusted solid after a mulleting trip.
