Why are 12 and 13 foot specimen rods 2 piece, but match rods of the same lengths are 3 piece ?

Because matchmen tackle up every time they fish and like their rods to break down to a handy length to fit in full rod bags. Most specialist leave their rods made up, which means that two pieces fold in two more easily and fit in quivers.

Also, two pieces, with one joint, make for a better action than three pieces with two joints. Not so important with match rods where most of the action is in the tip.

Not that I know of, not in 12ft-plus overall length anyway. But I'll keep an eye open and let you know if I hear of anything.

I've always puzzled over this myself. As matchmen have got to tackle up, fish and pack all their gear away in one day it would make sense for match gear to break down more easily. Could be a reason why the pole is so popular!!

Erm cant see you reasoning there cos a pole has to be broken down into even more peices!

A pole has more pieces, but it's quicker to set up as there's no reel or threading of line through rings and the float is already shotted and on a winder.

Two piece? Three piece?

In IYCF(August) Carp Tackle section they have the Shimano Exage seven piece carp rods!!!!

And, Graham, they claim the action to be "absolutely spot on".

Tackle manufacturers can claim all they like. The least number of joints in a rod, the better it's action.

However much improvement has been made with multi joint rods in recent years.

Brian, I have them here in my office, waiting to be reviewed. Later this week, or next.

Graham, I'll look forward to that. They seem reasonably priced at ?84.99 for 2.75lb tc and ?89.99 for 3lb tc, both 12ft.

In a similar vein I have a couple of telescopic rods. A John Wilson Avon and a Keenets K Class 2.25lb tc carp rod. Both these rods have a lovely action and I would be happy to use them to the exclusion of others if I had to. I've also tried out the Shimano Catana tele. Now that rod is amazing. I defy anybody to tell the difference if they were blindfolded between the tele version and the standard one.

Both tele and multi section rods have come on in leaps and bounds from the bad old days.

I too would be interested in seeing how such a rod performs. It's a lot easier transporting a 2 foot rod than a six foot rod tube.

Vince, would the rods you are thinking of be the 12'8" type. The remaining 4" left redundant after either myself or andy chop the top off (again) in the car tailgate
