Welly Wipes!

I was reading an old carp fishing mag the other day and came across an ad for something called a "welly wipe".

Please forgive my ignorance but I would imagine this is a piece old rag for cleaning muddy wellies. The problem here seemed to be the price of the thing ?15.00 if I remember. Do I read this correctly? 15 blinking quid for something to wipe your wellies with!!

Has the world gone mad? Someone will be marketing camo bivvy bog roll before long and certain people will be daft enough to buy it.

Are "welly wipes" for real?

Ron,I think that it is a cover
that fits over the bottom of a
bed chair to stop you getting
mud on it.I might be wrong though.

So what's wrong with a bin liner or an Asda bag David? I once made a very effectice Poncho for when it rained out of a large bin liner!

Ron,
Shame on you!
Don't you know that your chances of catching are severely reduced if you dont have ALL of the latest gear?
What self respecting fish is going to take your bait if you don't have every expensive product on the market?
AND...it must all match. No combination of manufacturers or colours.
I thought you were a very experienced angler but you seem to have forgoten the basics!

Tony, I can't afford the basics. Does that mean I must give up fishing?

if people are prepared to pay for it, then so be it.

I've said before that the carp angling market represents about 90% of the money going through most tackle shops.
If it wasn't for the carpers buying new gear, then most shops would have gone down the pan long before now and you'd have nowhere to buy your packet of hooks.

Actually Rik you have a very good point. All the barbel hooks I use these days were obviously developed by carp anglers for carp fishing.

Some of the bait we barbellers use, such as Trigga Carpet feed and various boilies were developed mainly for carp fishing. I use a Fox mini-micron at night - it takes the strain off my eyes, again aimed at carp anglers.

However in my area, with odd exceptions, you struggle to find a shop that specialises in carp gear.

Thats a fantastic statistic Rik I though it was more like 70%, although I expect you are right mate, I think the amazing thing about it is, the current market would'nt have started until after about 1978? prior to that period I can only recall a dozen or so specialist shops up and down the country, like going bros, southend, trev moss and a few others

Rik,
Interesting figures 90% of tackle shop money is from carp anglers.
Speaking to 3 off my local tackle dealers and they reckon match anglers are their biggest customers/spenders.

This could be specific to the area in which you live Dave, would you say its match orientated. I expect if you visited a shop say in the Colne Valley your findings could be different?

Try coming up my way boys, all you can get from my local tackle shops are fluff, bird wings and rabbit pelts.
I'm serious, I have to put in an order to get maggots.
They sell poles though but nothing to go with them not even bungs or elastic.

Central Scotland, midway between Edinburgh / Glasgow.
Closest decent shop in one of the above

Dave Dowson, most of todays 'match anglers' are actually carp anglers -but not in the speci mode.

you look through the average Kamasan or similar matches and they are carp dominated as Rik says.

Not all carp fishing is 'lump' fishing. Just look in the ave tackle shop at the bait......tons of pelet from the likes of Van den Eyde, Richworth...etc. Most of the poles are aimed at commercial carp cruncher venues......I think this is where Rik indicates the revenue is generated as well as the 'big spenders' on the bivvy/4 rods/matching Diawapit reels etc.

Yes, thats true Dave, the rise in carp poles for instance and venues stocked with small carp!

Ron,the welly wipe was in fact
invented by a Welsh shepherd.
They need all the traction that
they can get in the mud!
