Can you give us some bare facts?
Or can we view it on the P+P forum?

Obviously anyone who advocates killing eels is going to receive some pretty vitriolic retorts.

I've read some views on the P+P forum about it.

By putting pieces together can I assume that....

The article was written by a committe member of the National Anguilla Club who advocates that when an eel is caught it is removed from the venue to allow you to catch all the eels there in, without fear of repeat captures or spooked uncaught fish.

Eel conservation and welfare should be paramount and I hope that the NAC membership vote with their heads at the next AGM.

By all means look at the article and draw your own concluions / theorys,
I would like to stress that the N,A,C does not endorse the killing of eels no matter of what ever size they may be,No MATTER WHAT EVER REASON THAT THIS MAY BE FOR, these ARE Chris Siddals theories and are NOT a consencious of opinion of the membership of the National Anguilla Club,
True Chris is a member of the N,A,C and as we practice free speech he is obviously entitled to his opinions, after all thats what angling is all about,
But please do not assume that this is the general opinion of eel angling within the N,A,C,
Chris has named the N,A,C within his article as he is a member but that is the ONLY association WE share with it,

There are many factors to consider in regards eel conservation which the N,A,C are fully committed to, So be very aware that we the N,A,C want to distance our selves from this article and its contoversial contents.

It's good to see the NAC openly stating its stance.

Are you going to rescind this mans membership for blatantly disregarding your groups idealogies?

Haven't read the article yet but I do have strong feelings about exclusion. Exclusion of members is, in my view, the most foolish act any single species organisation can undertake. It is a sign that the ruling body are not in control and adhere to megalomania, rather than free speech. For any organisation to try and control individual members' actions by the threat of exclusion is doomed to failure, since in the end, you have to try and control everyone. PAC set foot on this rocky road a couple of years ago and got stung very badly.

the n a c have done so much work for the conservation of eels do you not feel it is a backword step for a headline like DONT put eels back by an n a c committee member not just a run of the mill member (CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG)

Eric,
the only reason the PAC got stung was because they pandered to the names.
If they'd have had the courage of their convictions and would have stood by their bans, then they would have been the stronger for it.

Any group is formed on its constitution, and this is based on its ethos, its beliefs and, through time, the beliefs of its members.

If any member publicly or privately defies the basic reason for the existance of any group, then they certainly don't deserve to be a member of that group.
If the member isn't brave enough to resign, then the committee should be brave enough to insist on it.

Carp angler has a very good point......if it had been me causing the noises fro being expelled from the PAC then i would still be expelled....as far as single species groups go the PAC is about the last i would join.
That said i agree that anyone should be free to say what they want, BUT, perhaps it would be best not to bring the name of your "club" into the debate......or at the very least state that your views/comments are not those of the club.
If a club is built on certain beliefs and the majority of members hold those beliefs then yes they should be able to ask others to resign............i do not know the full story here but if this guy has said we should remove eel from their habitat just to satisfy his ambitions then he should be asked to justify his position within the NAC......but that is only my personal view.

The NAC is one of our longest established single specie groups, pre dating NASG her self, being founded by Authur Sutton in December 1962, The Group has made significant inroads into the promotion, study and conservation of eels and eel angling, contains and has cotained many of the countries leading eel anglers and academic researchers and it saddens me greatly to learn of this. I know what you mean about exclusion Eric and share many aspects of your view, although I can also appreciate the view of others, particularly if this lad was a committee member. We live in a country of free speech, thank god, and everyone is entitled to his oppinion, I may not agree with some of these oppinions but I would die for the right of free expression. The NAC are faced with a very difficult one here and the angling eyes of the country will be watching them very carefully. I think in the first instance all fact should be made clear and the matter should be discussed with the angler involved and the NAC committee.

Monk,
Am i right in saying that the NAC refused to take the late John Sidley into it's ranks?

I am going to talk with the other commitee members and a detailed press release will be issued,
We are obviously fully aware of the impact of this article and how the N,A,C may be being looked upon,

I can say one thing that is that the commitee only knew of the article at the last commitee meeting earlier in the month,
But the article had gone to press,

I spoke to Chris and told him of my feelings on the matter and how the out come and article will look to the outsde world,

You are right the N,A,C has made progress through the E,C,S on eel conservation, But We are committed to continue that work and this will just add to that burden,

Paul,
The N,A,C in the earlier years thought that John Sidleys catches were I believe "Un realistic" that was down to the club at that time,
Everyone knows that John Sidley was "The man " in regards eels,
John Sidley is very highly respected by the current commitee and membership of the N,A,C
John Sidley was a member of the N,A,C and the N,A,C comemorates John`s work and captures of eels by the awarding of a club trophy, for the best eel over 6lbs, this is the trophy every N,A,C member wants their name on,

To answer your question properly Paul,

I'm not sure Paul, possibly, I was thrown out of the old CAA for speaking out in public many years ago, a lot of this has gone on thoughout our history and in many cases thats why we have more than one group in each specialism, just a fact of life mate. The NAC has like all groups had its problems over the years, but I would always back them up.

Good posting Tony, I hope your lads manage to sort things out in the right way, a difficult task mate, keep up the good work though, my kindest regards to all the guys.

I recieved a few emails and phone calls over the last few weeks which I think I should go public on because it concerns a controvesial point in the Eel world at the moment, so I would just like to record this here for prosperity

My good friend Brian Crawford discussed European expansion of the specialist movement over ten years ago with me and I have documentation to back this up, something I feel quite strong about. I will openly support any organisation which promotes angling and will remain neutral on internal politics and although not a current NAC member fully support the work in which the group is involved.
